Passing the Dice

Yesterday, I was in the GeekDen putting together my Labyrinth Lord megadungeon when my son -- almost 7 -- came up to me and wanted to "help". Normally, the boy is far more interested in all things sports related than dad's geekitude, but he semed real interested in the dice. As I was just determing random room contents anyway, I decided to let him roll for treasure after I rolled for content. As such, I gave him a "normal" d10 and a"10s" d10. he needs the practice with numbers, anyway.

After we finished, he asked me if he could have some dice, so I bequeathed upon him his first full 6 dice set and his own little dice bag, and told him when he turned 8 he could play D&D with daddy and his friends.

He was ecstatic.

I think I have something in my eye.

Awesome!

My son took an early interest to the gaming. He's 6 now and can play a reasonable game of D&D minis and has done several solo adventures - both from the 3.5 D&D basic set and ones I have written for him on the fly. He does pretty well with the basic rules and loves to roll the dice. He has a pretty good attention span though and a strong like of numbers which helps a lot for starting at his age.

Definitely good times though!

That is the sweetest thing I've ever heard. I hope my future children take after me like yours do you, at least in the world of gaming.

Awesome!

My daughter has been gaming in one form or another for the last few years (she turns 9 in a few days). But it was only this past winter that it occurred to me that she didn't have her very own set of dice. So I got her a Chessex set that were purple (her favorite color) from the FLGS and she thought it was the best thing ever.

Course now she only wants to roll HER dice. So if she needs to roll 3d8 then she's going to be rolling that purple d8 three times instead of grabbing other dice off the table. But hey, at least she's having fun, right?

At the moment she is WAY looking forward to our next session of the Savage Worlds campaign that I'm running for her and my wife.

Just let IronPup pick out his own first set of dice at Origins this year. He also picked out a small wooden treasure chest with a secret compartment to store them in!

I can't wait for this day. My twins are 2.5 years old and already enjoy my old 3.5e MM's and they really like the Kingmaker AP books that I have. I've successfully kept the minis from their grasp, because I worry about the choking hazards. Only a few more years...

I remember the days of making sure all my dice were picked up and safely stored up high out of kids reach. Good times! I did acquire a full set of plush dice from the conventions to give both kids some dice to roll that did not pose a threat to them.

They enjoy playing Yahtzee with us, more just shaking the dice in the cup thing and throwing them into the box, but yeah most of my current stuff is on the top shelf of our office now. I didn't have enough room for all my stuff, so past editions of D&D are on the bottom area, and accesible to small ones...

September...I can't wait for September. I am going to get my kids (almost 8 and 11)started on a D&D game. I would love to start now, but we are in the process of selling our house, buying a new one and then moving. That should be over with by September (better be since we need the kids into the new school system). Add to that the Essentials boxed set release and September becomes a great time to indoctrinate...um, I mean teach the kids D&D.
