Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Bestiary - Discussion

For completeness' sake, here are the names in the sidebar for the Archons. Make of them as you will!

"Archon Empyreal Lords"
Asteria, of the Endless Order
Cocidius, Hawk-Keeper
Duellona, the Warrior Maiden
Erlang Shen, the All-Seeing
Hors, the Freezing Sun
Inanna, Princess of the Sky
Lugus, the Three-Faced
Ogoun, of Fire and Iron
Oro, the Flame in the Sky
Radigost, Bringer of Boons
Sheave, the Orphan Lord
Svarozic, the Face of Flame
Tanit, Guardian of Life
Tahmineh, the Wounded Mother

FWIW, here's a listing of Golarion's archon lords, starting at the top tier of the plane, and moving down:

Summit - no ruler, only a walled garden / tree / empty throne.
Salaphiel
Melek Taus (missing, status unknown - maybe, sorta, kinda)
Uriel
Andoletta
Jegudiel
Sandalphon
Ragathiel

Can anyone answer me as to whether the creatures in the Bestiary are all the same as those in the 3.5 MM? Or are there creatures from Golarion as well?

For instance, many of the Pathfinder modules include new monsters like Empyreals, Prometheans (chaotic dudes to replace Slaadi, I think), the Vulpinal, and several others. Are some of these creatures going to appear in the Bestiary? Or is it strictly a Pathfinder updated version of the MM 3.5, with exactly the same monsters?

That'll help me determine whether to buy it, maybe just buy the PDF, or not buy it at all.....as much as I want to support Paizo, I can only stretch my cash so far.

P.S. I'm very interested in the Pathfinder creatures....I just don't necessarily want to have to go buy all the modules to pick up the 2-3 monsters per module, etc.

Thanks,

Banshee

On my way out the door, so I can't give a detailed reply - but it's not an exact reprint of the 3.5MM. Some monsters that were in the 3.5MM were dropped; others that were in the Tome of Horrors were added in (froghemoth!!).

I don't recall seeing any monsters I didn't recognize, so I don't think any of the Adventure Path critters are in there. I could be wrong, though; I haven't had a good, long sit-down with it yet.

This Bestiary is very much intended to capture the feel of the core monster experience (AKA: The 3.5 MM). That said, there are a couple of monsters from Pathfinder and the modules in here, like the boggard, the shaitan genie, and the goblin dog.

I suspect we'll be doing another Bestiary down the line, and THAT one will likely have a more robust amount of monsters from Golarion in it (although presented in a world-neutral way, so you can easily use things like rune giants and attic whisperers in any setting).

Yeah; the demon lords and arch devils and stuff are just names in the Bestiary; we've got the Book of the Damned line of books dedicated to talking about them themselves (we don't currently have plans to stat them up, but if/when we do, they'll be CR 26–36 or thereabouts).

Pathfinder Epic Level Handbook.

I await its arrival....

;)

You know, some guy named Erik Mona came up with a very cool list of demon lord names for Green Ronin's Armies of the Abyss. And I think they're all open content.

Sort of a shame no one ever picked up that list and ran with it . . .

Actually, we use/reference that book a LOT for Pathfinder stuff. Several of the demon lords mentioned in that book (Flauros, Nocticula, Shax, Socothbenoth, Abraxus, etc.) have pretty huge roles in Golarion, in fact. Not all of them, since we wanted to build our own collection of demon lords. We basically picked and chose demon lords from a mix of open content (thanks, Tome of Horrors!), the Book of Fiends, real-world mythology, my home-brew campaign, and a few we made up specifically for Golarion. Not all of these are mentioned in the Bestiary, though, since there simply wasn't enough room to go into much detail there about demon lords at all.

The first Shaitan genies and Shoggoth I saw were in adventure paths.

(Obviously, the Shoggoth were in Call of Cthulhu first, including the d20 version, but hopefully you get what I mean!)

The only thing I am upset about with the bestiary is the lack of 2 creatures, Illithids and Genasi. I know they probably can't use Genasi but a form of elemental planetouched would've been fantastic. Overall, fantastic artwork and a billion times more useful than the 3E MM. Thanks a bunch Paizo :D

In the Qadira book is the race you are looking for.
