Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Just Keeps Looking Better

...am I right?

Last night, I went to the Paizo website to grab a few PDFs before they all got pulled down. Alas, their poor server was too overloaded to oblige, and I missed out.

I didn't want to leave empty-handed, though, so I grabbed the free Pathfinder Beta Playtest while I was there.

I hadn't seen Pathfinder since the first Alpha release...and man, it has really come a long way since that first show-and-tell piece. The mechanics are interesting. The artwork is awesome. The campaign setting is intriguing.

I've been in a bit of a gaming drought for a while now. My group finished up our 3.5E campaign a few months ago, and our sandbox BECM game never really took root. We tried a couple of 4E games, but nobody really cares for it. I was going to kick off another 3.5E game at the end of this semester, and call it "good enough." But now?

Now, I can't stop thinking about a Pathfinder homebrew.

I agree that the artwork is awesome and the setting is equally nifty. Mechanics are what I am looking for the final product. I am hoping for what was promised, a simplified system. What I see in the Beta is simplified in some areas, and made more complex in others... equating to a system I am not interested in. I hope the final version is closer to what I want. Until then, I sit upon the fence and play 3.5 and 4E.

Agreed

I'm currently in the middle of a 3.5 campaign, and had been unsure about whether I'd go with Pathfinder when it finishes next year, or take a fresh look at 4E.

But, WoTC and I are no longer doing business. I eventually want to be playing a system with ongoing support, so I'm glad Pathfinder is looking good!

If I'm going to be running or playing D&D, or D&D-like, it'll be Pathfinder, Mutants & Masterminds (with Warriors & Warlocks in full effect, yo), True20 or. . . OD&D. Yeah, that's a bit of a range there, I know. A nominally superhero-oriented point-build RPG, a 'generic' multi-genre class-and-level d20-based system, a 3.5 spin-off with exceptionally high production values and superb support guaranteed, and. . . the thing that started it all, as 'old school' as you might hope to get, without gaming with some of the original crew. :hmm:

But that's where we stand, currently. And yes, Pathfinder still looks good. Better than when it started, even. And that's encouraging. Also, it's the largest open playtest of any RPG, so far. I think it'll do quite nicely for itself (well, for Paizo).

The art in Pathfinder is usually pretty good, as it usually is in Paizo products, but I'm a huge fan of Wayne Reynolds, so maybe I'm a little biased. While I find it to be occasionally more "cheese-cakey" than I'm comfortable with, their stellar production values are definitely the companies strong suit. I'm glad they put a lot of artwork up on their website, though, as I'm not nearly as fond of the rule system they're going with for their future products.

Reynolds is good, there is no denying his talent. I prefer Jeremy Jarvis's stuff, myself, because I like art with a more dreamlike, abstract feel.

I'm super-psyched about the release of Warriors & Warlocks, but I'm just not on the Pathfinder bandwagon. Pathfinder looks like the opportunity to purchase 3.5 again, which, being quite happy with the original set I already own, I see no reason to do.
