Pathfinder 1E Pathfinder Sneak Peeks (Old thread)

1) I dislike the LG alignment restriction, even though it's been around forever. This is one area I see that 4e got right in not restricting it to this. I see the Paladin as a Warrior for his church regardless if it is good or not. Just my opinion and easily modified but why restrict a it to LG when they could have given options based upon the alignment of the deity they fight for? Just my $0.02 and I know it can be house ruled anyhow so nothing big I guess.

May I suggest Green Ronin's "Book of the Righteous" PDF. Using their deities, it creates a Holy Warrior (Paladin for the "pantheon") for every alignment. One of the few, and most useful, supplements that I have purchased. And for the bad guys, the "Unholy Warrior's" handbook

what I am saying is being evil does not mean I kill people.. CE maybe as they see no right or wrong they are psychopaths more or less.

Now say that barkeep stole from the books, made sure he got a little extra, he robs people by over charging giving drunks the wrong change back, maybe lets pickpockets know whos the best mark.

You can find selflish NE people just because they glow under a spell that says they are evil that don't mean they like to kill people or do it at all.

Being a jerk does not equal evil.
Both good and evil can be jerks (Order of the Stick proves this with Miko).

Bartender is Chaotic neutral if he breaks the law (stealing).

The man who Bleeds a family for every penny they own in taxes is evil but that does not mean he goes around stabbing and murding folks
I find labeling jerks as evil anthama to me.
He is still not evil yet. Unless he hurts them in some way like beating them, not evil.

We will likely do some other classes based on other alignments in due time (the anti-paladin comes to mind), but for this release we decided to stick to our roots.

The Lay On Hands is half paladin levels + Chr mod times per day, and "Turning Undead" ("Channeling Energy") costs two uses of Lay on Hands, so it's not completely with out drawbacks. The example character also has a feat to get extra uses of Lay on Hands. But it IS a lot better than before.

As for the "magic item smorgasbord, they did cut back on all stat boosting items (physical boosters are all belts, mental boosters are all headbands), but you STILL have the design goal of reverse compatability. People seem to forget that this was a major design parameter. Such massive reworking of the rules that removed Detect/Smite Evil, or the alignment restriction, or got rid of most of the magic items would be so radically different as to constitute a completely new, non-backwards-compatable game. Not what they were trying to do.

When the Fighter preview was up, it was an example of a non-optimized build. People bitched. Now we have a more optimized Paladin build. Guess what? People are bitching. Go figure.

See, this is something I've never understood. For me, the cleric has always been the big member of his/her church. The paladin is LG first, part of a church second - their dedication is to being the classic chivalrious knight, and while that does include religion, that's not all it's about.

I can see an anti-paladin, a paragon of evil, if you will, yes, but a neutral or unaligned paladin? At least speaking for me personally, that goes against everything paladins are supposed to be about. Paladins are about passion, about being a part of a driving force dedicated to Good to rid the world of evil (Or good, for the anti-paladin ;p). Mind you, that doesn't mean they're ALL MARTIAL ALL THE TIME - the paladin has Diplomacy as a skill for a reason.

So whose ready to watch a party with a 20th level paladin go wreck shop through an army of balors? (+40 to damage for everyone in the party!). Though at 2 smites per pop it wouldn't be that many balors...but still:)
