Paxus' Epic/High Level Game (3.5): Closed

Alright, I posted a work-in-progress version of my character in the Rogue's Gallery thread. I ended up going with brass instead of bronze; I really do want to be able to use a couple of decent spells, after all.

Anyways, if anybody has any suggestions or comments, feel free to say something. This is actually the first high level character I've put together in 3.5, not to mention the first dragon, and the first custom item, etc. etc.

First I don't see your age category. :)

You have some money to spend still and inherent ability bonuses are always nice way to go. :)

Your breath weapon DC is rather low, you might want to look at some way to raise it, but at least I don't have to worry about Brystasia getting hit by a stray blast. :D

Also shouldn't you be building a 21 level character in all honesty or does PA plan on working you in before the end of this chapter?

Ah, I'll add the age category in a bit. It's Juvenile, by the way.

I've got the heighten breath feat for the breath weapon, which can raise the DC up to 28.

As for a 21st level character... dunno?

Oh yeah, and spend all of my money? Madness! I'm a dragon, I simply must have a hoard!

Silly question, but is there a level adjustment for Dragons higher than juvenile, or are you permanently stuck as a juvenile Dragon? The ECLs in the MM and Draconomicon seem to stop at level 20 characters.

I would take a 16 Hit Dice Young Adult Brass Dragon (LA +5). You get Frightful Presence, SR, and DR that the juvenile dragon doesn't have, and your caster level is still level 5.

Well since you asked....

AC looks niiiiiiice. :D

I see you took Spell Penetration. Plan on casting spells against Epic enemies with that CL 6? I only see 2 spells for which it would apply and you can do more damage with a given claw attack (with a much better chance of success). The Draconomicon has lots of excellent dragon feats even if you're only size Large.

Speaking of attacks, I don't see them listed. :/ 13 Dragon HD + 3 sorceror + 23 STR + 3 Enhancement -1 Size = about +22 for the primary? +20 for the rest? Not bad but you'd have trouble hitting some AC's, and True Strike is a Standard Action to cast and only lasts for 1 attack...the next round. In Epic play, you might be dead by then.

Play to your strengths. You're a dragon! Attack first, attack often! You might reallocate some points out of your mental stats and put them into DEX, then look into Improved Initiative. You might look into the Leadership feat to help you out on the spellcasting end, or work out a sweetheart deal with one of our generous casters. But trust me on this one, dragons are not good casters. ;)

(My dragon in the tabletop game uses Improved Grapple and a friendly Righteous Might* to great effect. If the DM is willing, you might look into making that Lion's Charge into an item that let's you use it a free action. It would then be a 6th level spell, usable x times per day but for a dragon with bite/claw/claw/wing/wing/tail slap, it's priceless. :D)

* EDIT: Ring of Spell Storing. Yummy.

A few suggestions. One, I'll agree with Velenne that the PC casting classes are a little underpowered for a dragon; the PrCs in the Draconomicon offer much better progressions if you can reach them, as they offer full BAB, multiple strong saves, and no hit die smaller than a d8. Though it would take you until 25th level to qualify, the Elemental Master is also a really, really nice choice. Otherwise, dragon hit dice seem the way to go; 2/3 casting progression, but much better combat potential.

Spell Penetration is going to do you exactly zero good; there isn't a single truly epic nasty with SR low enough for a +8 to penetrate. Metabreath feats may be more useful, especially Clinging Breath, Empower Breath, Ability Focus: Breath Weapon, and the all-important Rapid Breath. Leadership could give you either arcane backup or, with the Dragonrider prestige class, a number of extremely useful benefits (better maneuverability and Flyby Attack).

For items, an item of natural armor would boost your AC into the nigh-invulnerable range. Claws of the Ripper would make your damage potential truly awesome, especially in conjunction with a keen enhancement on the amulet of natural weapons ( payable by dropping the flaming burst down to flaming).

And one more thing; you can't make Draconic Might permanent. Bonuses have their own formulae, and an item of Draconic Might would cost 182,000 (25,000 for each +5 to an ability, 32,000 for the +4 to natural armor, and doubling all but the most expensive for being one item).

I got to agree with Velenne on this... Its silly trying to take a race through a class their not meant to be. Not trying to debate rather or not dragons are good to casters as old dragons are great at it but at are level your not going to be.

I think leadership is a great way to go we really do need an arcane caster a true rogue would be nice also... Of course with your character I would be tempted to my cohort a normal race that you where bond to someway so how... Probably romantically involved but that's probably just my character speaking. :D

As for needing the above I sort of screwed the party over with my character. :D

Off handedly: Any reason why no one is posting in character today?

Eugh. Had I known it would be such a pain working a dragon into something even worth playing, I wouldn't have bothered with it. I'm just going to scrap the entire thing and go with something else. A spellsword, perhaps?

Didn't mean to turn you off the dragon, but if you'd rather the spellsword, that's just fine.
