I would only pay to play if it were a convention, charity, or the DM was well known and was going to use full and accurate miniatures, extensive props, and was really good at manageing the game, people and did a different voiuce for the npcs.

But I insist on a contract, including a clause to this effect: if the game sucks (IMO, of course!), I get to whack the GM upside the head with the roleplaying manual of my choice.

[edit: This applies per session, of course. Possibly twice per session, for exceptionally long sessions.]

I've found that the recent Everquest PH (for the pen-and-paper RPG) is wonderfully suited for this task.

Have you tried the new D20 Modern?

I no longer charge for my games, mainly because I don't have to. I've reached Platinum status in the network and I've got 32 associates DMing under me. So I just sit back and enjoy the game while the checks roll in. Per game profits have never been better.

Plus on top of that, I get a pretty good cut of the door when I conduct monthly seminars touching on various topics such as how to sell product placement to snack company sponsors, how to derive the perfect hourly rate for games in different areas of the country, how to tap into local homegame dominated markets, etc.

There's good money to be found my friends.

Repeatedly bangs head on table.

Owe. A lot.

LOL!

What I'd like to know is if there are any DM's out there who have to pay their players to show up every week.

Any one willing to confess?

Certainly not!

I would never confess.;)

I am not a troll...

I hope you're not referring to me. I'm pretty new to these boards, and was not around for any previous incarnations of this thread. I really wanted to know, although now that a few days have passed, I'm pretty firmly on the "against" side of the argument.

That said, I don't really think that discussing the pros and cons of a semi-controversial issue constitutes trolling. Certain issues should be allowed to be discussed without being labeled as trolling. To me, that seems like a common attempt to censor ideas that may be unpopular.

Though there are definitely trolls out there...

I just realized that the above comment was likely in response to the idea of paying players to play in your game. If so, I apologise.

I'll leave the above post for the sake of discussion and as a reminder to myself to think before I post.

No, I think you were right the first time. On all counts. He was refering to you but we are adults (or close to it in most cases) and are capable of duscussing this issue without getting angry or rude. The question is, will we do so?

As evidenced by P-Kitty in other threads, we get the chance to do so, regardless of how many incarnations of the question have apeared on the boards. It's not until we prove that we aren't going to that the thread becomes closed.

That said, Fast Learner is right in that this was one of the very first trolls to come up on the boards. Which brings us back to the original question, Are we going to handle it like adults?
