Background:
Father Flannigan grew up in a small rural town in county Cork Ireland. His family was fiercely Roman Catholic. Michael lost two Uncles and a Cousin in 'The Troubles' in Northen Ireland. Some members of his family are still invoved in the IRA. Michael would have likely followed in their footsteps but for his dear old mother and a strange encounter when he was a small boy.
While herding his father's sheep home on a warm summer evening, Michael passed an ancient copse of trees. From within the trees he heard an eerie and haunting melody from some sort of flute or pipes. He left the trail to investigate. Sneaking through the woods he came to a clearing. Gathered around a strange mound of earth were several strange creatures. Michael did not believe his eyes, but they bore a strong resemblance to the 'sidhe' his Grandmother had told him about in stories. Small and thin, with strange features like goat legs and horns, the faeries were engaged in some sort of dance. It was hypnotic, the figures swayed to and fro with an unearthly grace. Michael watched for some time before spoting the object of the creatures attention. A human child was lying on the ground in the center of the circle. As the faeries dance came to an end they all began to approach the child. In a moment of extreme horror they all fell upon the child, ripping it from limb to limb. Michael screamed in terror. The pipe player, a satyr like creature, looked up and smiled at Michael. He let out a shrill melody on his pipes and Michael fled in terror. He never told his family, fearing their scorn. He still bears the mark of this horrific day in the form of going prematurely gray along his temples.
Michael grew morose and introspective, shunning friends and family alike. He began to read and study, trying to find an explanation for the sight he had seen. No books could explain the event. The only time he felt any solace was on sunday morning at mass. Witnessing his interest in the Church, Michael's mother urged him to go to seminary. Michael lept into his studies at Trinity College in Dublin, hoping the mysteries of the Church could ease his troubled soul. What Michael found in the church did little to do that. In fact he learned of far more terrible things that baby-snatching banshees.
One of Michael's instructiors, Monseignor Liam Devlin, took interest in Michael and his studies. Liam watched Michael for several years, testing him in his studies as well as his faith. On the eve of his graduation from Trinity, a group of robed men abducted Michael and took him to a secluded, ruined church. It was there that he first learned of the secret group within the Catholic Church, whose purpose is to root out supernatural evils in the world. All night he was shown proof of the paranormal, demonic and undead. At the end of the night he was given the choice to join them. He accepted. It was fortunate that he did, later he learned that to refuse meant instant death.
The group is known as the Fraternitas Malifecum Impactus (literally: the brothers who fling themselves at evil). He started his training under Monseignor Devlin the following year, after taking his vows in Rome. Michael learned that the brotherhood was an ancient and secret order in the Church. They weild extreme power in the Church heirarchy, while keeping an extremely low profile. Few Popes have even known of their existence. Their purpose is to root out and destroy the various evils that the mainstream church refuses to acknowledge exist. The brotherhood has reason to believe the recet brownouts may be the work of supernatural forces. Father Flannigan has been dispatched to Dallas to determine the truth of the matter.
