Permanency Enlarge Person

Pendantic note: if you wanted to save a few coins you could technically hire a 1st level wizard (or use a scroll) for this part, but it typically wouldn't be worth it.
It would be less than worth it, to be sure. Remember that such spells are dispelled as normal, so paying about 3000gp for a 1st-level casting that will be easily dispelled is a really poor choice. I'm not sure what happens in terms of the effect, though. Can the enlarge person and permanency be dispelled independently?

Note also that most spellcasters with an Int above 8 will not cast XP-requiring spells for profit. It's a very poor business model to burn XP at only x5 the value when you can create items for over double that.

So I generally don't have spellcasters agree to cast such spells without significant in-game reasons.

If making expensive magic items with your Feat is a hopping business than already drains every spare XP, sure. But it may be that the wizard considers Permenancy a good deal and item creation a great deal, so he says yes to both.

Permanancy is such a risky spell. You spend all this gold (or XP) to get an effect and then some lolligagger comes along and *pop* it's dispelled.

In fact, you should just assume that will happen eventually, and figure out if it is worthwhile anyway. For someone who has invested in item crafting feats it is probably not worth it unless you are desperate for boosts that do not use any body slots.

Probably the best defense would be to not look like the first person in the party to hit with the targetted Greater Dispelling.

No, it basically just takes the ongonig spell and changes it to Duration: Permanent. The spell that gets dispelled is still the original spell (_enlarge person_, _tongues_, whatever).

Good point, so the enlarge person definitely doesn't gain a different caster level. If you cast enlarge person as CL1 and then use permanency, you can dispel it quite easily. So, you want the enlarge person at 20th+ level (max) and the permanency at 9th (min). That's still cheap, though, and difficult to dispel. 200gp vs. 10gp is not much in comparison to the 2950 cost for the permanency. If the caster of the enlarge person has the appropriate ioun stone or that cool ring, even better. :)

I should clarify, though, that if you yourself cast _permanency_ on yourself, the spell can then only be dispelled by someone higher CL than you (no matter what they roll on their dispel check). Which means that, yes, if you yourself have _permanency_ prepared, it's worth it to get _enlarge person_ from a scroll or from a low-level caster, as your CL overrides his.

However, this wasn't the OP's question, and if you're capable of casting 5th-level spells, you're unlikely to be the kind of character who'd find being permanently enlarged an advantage.
