I was thinking of that advantage (though not that particular example  ) earlier myself... you can use more pronouns and not say "the caster" "the target" "the defender" over and over again.
And if only Warforged were ungendered, we'd have "it" for our 3rd role... oozes and such still count, I think, so for combat we can often use "it". ;)

What choice best represents, "I don't give a kobold's hindquarters what they do."?

A talented writer can frame things in such a way that it never becomes an issue. In fact, one of my professors insisted on docking students points from their grades for using "he" or "she" in papers, correctly or otherwise. I always thought that was a bit strict for a business class, but I got the point.

I voted for "he". It's basically the "masculine or neuter". Unless the context specifies female, I think "he" works fine. It's not a big deal to me either way, though, as long as they avoid something particularly laborious and counter-intuitive.

Although the poll left out the option for "Weird experimental invented pronoun" like "ze" or whatever. Let me make it clear that I would not have voted for this option. :)

Ok, ready your slings and arrows.

When I was in school, we were taught to use the male pronoun as generic. Having had that drilled into me for so many years, when I see female pronouns used generically it jumps out at me and screams "Hey, look at us, we're going out of our way to be non-offensive and inclusive."

OTOH, I had an English professor who was also a magazine editor. I asked her about proper pronoun usage. She said the accpeted proper usage had changed to include either male or female pronouns. So, whether I like it or not apparently the times have passed me by. Old habits die hard, and in answer to the OP question, I prefer male pronouns. I'm not trying to make a political statement with my answer - just trying to explain my preference.

Thanks to a life of linguistic conditioning, whenever I read the word "she" as a pronoun, I always assume it is referring to a specific individual. I don't have that response when someone uses "he". As such, I would dislike it if "she" was used, even alternating with "he" as a generic pronoun. However, I wouldn't mind if use of specific characters (like the iconics) is used as the basis for the use of pronouns (like is done in the 3E books).

I think "they" is out of the question. It is hard to do that right, for reasons I mentioned in the last thread. At least, it would be bad if they tried to use "they" as a singular pronoun. If it said "Rogues get sneak attacks whenever they flank their opponent," then I would be fine with the use of "they", since it is the plural form.

Writing the books in the second-person, always using "you" to refer to the player or DM, would also work. It would have to be consistent, but it would not be a bad solution (it would make an interesting change to the tone of the books, though).

I voted "he." I only read "he" as male when I know the topic is discussing a specific male person, and others always as the generic neuter. "she" is always a specific female to me. If I see "she" used when no specific female is being discussed, I find it distracting.

But mostly I just don't give a flying kobold butt.
