Pestilence

Had a question about the combination of cards "Pestilence" and "Circle of Protection: Black". My friends and I still play type one, because frankly we are very displeased with all of the new cards and sets... But anyways... my question, was, since the pestilence card reads "Tap 1 black mana, deal one damage to all creatures and players." and the CoP:Black" reads, "Tap one colorless mana, prevent all damage to you from one black source."
Since the pestilence is a single mana tap, unlike fireball or spellblast, do they have to tap one mana to protect themselves for every mana they put into pestilence? My friend will put like anywhere from 4-9 into pestilence, tap one and says he is protected from it all.

I dont think this is really fair, and I dont think it is they way the cards work. Someone please let me know Thanks.

This definetly sounds like a M:tG question, whereas this forum is for ISRP, our Interactive Storyline Role Playing, so it won't get answered here.

Magic has two sections all to it's own, M:tG boards and Magic: the Gathering Online. I suggest you try the M:tG boards, probably Rules Q&A, although you might want to check out Card Stratagies and Combos.
