Pet Peeves....

People like this. Who's to say "your" D&D is the "Real" D&D?

He is. His D&D is the real D&D. But then my D&D is also the real D&D and its not the same as his. The real D&D is many things.

I know, but I've always disliked threads that just list complaints...so you can call this thread a personal pet peeve of my own....

Hehe, so you should better stay out of this thread ;).

Anyway, although my list was pretty extensive, many of those problems have easy workarounds. That's the marvel of OGL :).

:D Maybe I should drop a link to a certain aricle on "The Forge" in this regard. The summary there was something like that there has never been anything similar to "the D&D game" during the old days of D&D. Several versions coexisted. Rulebooks reflected more or less the state of the homebrew campaign of the author. As none of the rules versions was complete, D&D was played differently in each and every group as a necessity for filling the gaps. This makes the notion of "one true D&D" a bit ridiculous ;).

I think it's just human nature to complain more than praise. That's why people are my pet peeve :)

My only real pet peeve is the randomness of hit points. With point buy for ability scores, hit points are the last random element at character creation/advancement and they are so critical it makes no sense that they should be random. But I don't like instituting 1/2 or 2/3 or any other fraction of max hit points on characters. No solution for me.

It's also a cultural thing. In my experience, Americans are very sensitive in this regard and like to add some kind of praise to all their criticisms. Where I come from, people get suspicious if you don't complain enough :D;).

Well, with max HP at first level, there's something for the start. And if I remember correctly, during leveling up there was some mechanics to adjust a row of bad rolls in consecutive levels in the core rules.

My pet peeve? Well, I really, really like 3.5. But one thing bothers me. The discrepancy between BAB, which advances continuously, albeit at different rates, and magic/spellcasting, which does not advance the same fashion. I would rather see BAB as a skill, like Psion said, but at the same time see mastery of spellcasting treated in a similar fashion.
