Considering that the unarmed strike is considered a simple weapon, and thus fighter abilities all work with it (as they should), it seems to me that the fighter is already a brawler, as he should be. He doesn't have the magical strikes like a monk, but he's definitely able to kill things with his bare hands, though like all martial artists, he's even more effective when he has a weapon.
