It was because I was quoting someone else that I used their polarising terminology. I would have been more accurate to say 'non-haters' vs 'haters'.
In truth I would guess that 99% of groups are indifferent to the monk. It is just there as an option that will sometimes be chosen and sometimes not chosen. The end result of this, though, is that there will be lots of groups who have monk PCs and who would quite like to convert to 4e but have existing characters which they love which they can't easily convert.
It seems logical to me that WotC will want to bring existing base character classes into the fold as quickly as practical to extend the potential appeal of 4e.
