Thanks for all the clarifications. So in summary a dragon, even if pinned, can breathe any time it likes subject to 1d4 rounds delay.

Yep, but as a DM I would rule that he could hit the one he's grappling with automatically, but would need to win an opposed grapple check to control his "aim" to hit others outside the grapple.

"So the players have subdued the dragon and returned it to the Kobolds. Now they plan to wipe the Kobolds out - so they'll have to fight it again! "

Please tell us how this worked out. I can´t imagine that the kobold tribe should have any trouble defeat the party.
Learn them when to fight and when not .
(Ok, I´ll admit it, I kinda like Meepo and this tribe, so what ? ;)

Pinned vs. Grappling vs. Snatch Bite

Pinned is a lot different from Grappling or being Snatched by a bite.

If the PC was snatched with a bite, I agree that the breath weapon would automatically hit, no save.

If the PC is grappling the Dragon, I would allow the breath weapon to work as normal and a normal save for the grapplee to see if he can dodge out of the way or force the mouth out of the way.

If the Dragon is pinned, I would assume that the Dragon's mouth (the most dangerous part of the Dragon), is forced away from the pinning people. So if the Dragon uses his breath weapon, they would get 3/4 cover or 9/10 or total cover (i.e. only getting hit by backwash, not the breath weapon itself).

I'd be tempted to rule it the other way, the dragon can breath on anyone other than the pinner. I picture the person pinning as holding down its legs to stop those sharp claws attacking.

Actually thinking about it I'm not sure that a a humaniod grappler can effectively pin a non humanoid - most animals/monsters seem to twist in ways that humanoids can't match. For example many pics of dragons show long sinuous necks. If a humanoid is holding the legs pinned whats holding the dragons neck? If the player is holding the head at least one pair of legs is free. Anyone who has tried to give pills to a reluctant house cat will know EXACTLY what I mean here - I still have scars

Bad news - Meepo is no more :-(

Party pulls a door open and step back, theyve heard hissing and the sound of sharp claws scittering across stone behine the door but fail to recognise these sounds as belonging to a dragon. "Its dark in the room and you see nothing in the part of the room you can see through the door".

Ulrich the Cleric "OK I throw my torch in to the room so I can see better"

(the players have now thrown fire at a WHITE dragon - its realy not happy about this!)

DM "You hear a loud hiss and a tiny white drapon appears in the doorway"

Dagar the Ranger "Meepo go and talk to the Dragon"

Meepo "I dont want to go!"

Dagar "Its your dragon get on with it!"

DM "Meepo moves towards the dragon. Its mightily p**sed off you threw fire at it and it breaths all over Meepo who falls frozen to the floor - roll initiative please"

With 2 hp Meepo didn't stand a chance.

Sad to hear that.
The party I´m running actually made a deal with the kobold queen: "If we wipe out the goblin tribe, then you release Calcryx?"
(a lawful good wizard and a dragon aficionado made this deal)
So, she figured that with no goblins left - no need for Calcryx - so she agreed.
Then they agreed to try to subdue Calryx - not so easy as it sounds. It was a tough battle, but eventually they managed to bring back Calcryx to the kobold camp.
(Meepo vas at - 2 due to the cone of cold, but the cleric stabilzed him)
The fun part of this is that Meepo has proven to be quite useful to the party. He and Erky is now full members of the party, and without them, the final battle against Belak wouldn´t have been a sucess.

In Saturday's session the Kobolds almost killed off the party - as it was they captured the Prince

Oh yeah one of the party members is an NPC, the Kings eldest son, the PCs have to take him with them but are under strict orders not to get him killed. Unfortunately for them he's niave, and very impetuous :p

Anyway I gave them a b*llocking for using dreadful tactics and the rescue mission went an lot better, the prince was retrieved naked but unhurt and the Kobolds slain

After the eventure, sitting in the village elders hut the rougue decides to use his use object skill on the qualls feather token to determine what it is. He rolls high, and the oak tree smashes the elder's hut to pieces....
