So, how does that work? I "roll" a random character on the generator?

Yes. You can deliberately generate a character using the Pirate Borg rules but honestly unless you have a specific character concept in mind, it's more fun to use the random generator Whizbang linked to in his original post. Keep in mind this is not a game of character optimization like 5e but rather one where the PCs are expected to have short life expectancies like Call of Cthulhu. Rolling a rando is very much part of the general chaos of the game.

Also I have a question -- I joined thinking we were doing a one-session game on Discord or a VTT but is this a play-by-post game instead? I'm down either way but I'm a little confused about what I've signed up for.
