So as I sat through the movie, the one thought that kept returning to my mind over and over and over- is "Wow! WOTC is so gonna sue these guys over intellectual property!!"

Did any other gamers immediatly think mind flayer when they saw the evil squid dude?

No.

The key things about a mindflayer aren't just its looks, and Davey Jones had none of the other features that distinguishes a mindflayer.

This is true, though I will likely remember Davey Jones for inspiration when I run illithids in the future. :)

And in my case, I did think of D&D Mind Flayers, but before I thought of them I thought of that which was their most likely inspiration in turn: Great Cthulhu himself. In fact, I'm certain I'm not the only one, as I've seen the Big C mentioned in other posts in conjunction with Davey. Actually I think one could make a very cool Call of Cthulhu campaign set in the late 1700s based on the premise of Davey Jones and the Flying Dutchman getting their powers from Cthulhu and the Deep Ones.

No. Because he's actually Captain Kraken from the Mutants & Masterminds game.

Or another adventure set in the 20's: The Last Train to Clarksville. A Pleasant Valley Sunday? Probably not. However I'm a believer but I'm not your stepping stone. Sorry, couldn't resist. :heh:

Then again that'd be scarier as a CoC / d20 Modern / d20 D*M adventure: the Monkees (or Nsync!) as mutant servitors of the Elder Gods! Play their music backwards and get sanity loss from the hidden incantations. Play it forwards and um... get the same results.

I was trying to stat up the Flying Dutchman as a semi-living construct that magically bound and altered those who swore to serve upon it, granting longer life at teh cost of humanity...

And, of course, the first time I saw Davey I knew that the writers had, indeed, read Lovecraft. :P
