Did any other gamers immediatly think mind flayer when they saw the evil squid dude?
This is true, though I will likely remember Davey Jones for inspiration when I run illithids in the future.Whizbang Dustyboots said:No.
The key things about a mindflayer aren't just its looks, and Davey Jones had none of the other features that distinguishes a mindflayer.
No. Because he's actually Captain Kraken from the Mutants & Masterminds game.Vorput said:So as I sat through the movie, the one thought that kept returning to my mind over and over and over- is "Wow! WOTC is so gonna sue these guys over intellectual property!!"

And in my case, I did think of D&D Mind Flayers, but before I thought of them I thought of that which was their most likely inspiration in turn: Great Cthulhu himself. In fact, I'm certain I'm not the only one, as I've seen the Big C mentioned in other posts in conjunction with Davey. Actually I think one could make a very cool Call of Cthulhu campaign set in the late 1700s based on the premise of Davey Jones and the Flying Dutchman getting their powers from Cthulhu and the Deep Ones.
