Planar Handbook Chat Log

Yes the ruleset for 3e is much, much better, but it lacks the soul it used to have before I'd picked my first 3e book.
The rule-sets have no soul to them, it's the material put out for them that have the soul. If 2nd-edition had a soul, it would look like dog dung covered in flecks of gold.

As long as WotC continues to put out Draconomicon quality books, they'll be getting my money. Heck, they should produce MORE bad books, so I can spread my funds more evenly amongst the 3rd party publishers. ;)

What's worse, I have a cousin who's in to LARPing, and another who's practically my student (I helped get him in to drawing, and later anime, and now he's twice as good as I'll ever be at it). I give him advice, and he follows it. I even left him my 3.0e MM to sketch from last I saw him. But as it stands, I cannot, with good conscious, aim him towards D&D, even though he could certainly use an ice breaker for college other than his guitars (did I mention that he has a good-paying job with his dad that could net him a D&D library rather easily?)

But someone's design says no.
That's ridiculous.

If you hate everything that WotC puts out, there are literally dozens of 3rd party publishers out there to sate any potential gamer's wishes. Malhavoc, Green Ronin, Privateer Press, Necromancer Games, and Fantasy Flight Games to name a few. Heck, if you hate the rules only approach of WotC, then turn to the 3rd parties who are less driven by the mantra of 'what appeals to everybody equally.'

So you could still play D&D and not really support WotC. The glories of the OGL.

They were alone in the center of Regulus, surrounded by modron corpses. It was completely and utterly silent.

And then Primus' tower collapsed.

Best. Scene. Ever.
My hero. :p

I got a chance to look at the book today. Gave it a quick perusal and here's my thoughts. It's an interesting book with what looks to be some good flavor and crunch and many, many mineable ideas. However, if you're looking for Core PlaneScape, look away. Probably stay very far away from the book. ;)

I like it good....I don't understand why people are angry about it for not being PS, myself.....it's unreasonable to hold everything up to that expectation. :)

It's a tad underwhelming, but it gives a lot of the crunch that completes a planar campaign. It's only a small, gentle step to making it PS.

I didn't say I hate everything they put out. However, after the reviews and the chat info, I decided to order Serpent Kingdoms instead. I may prefer PS and DS, but they're not my only area of interest within fantasy. I also don't see how you correlate 'no purchase' with 'no D&D'. I buy which products I feel are useful/enjoyable. No more, no less. Nothing produced by 3rd parties that I can review (I'm not wasting gas or bus money to hunt down the WoD-dominated gaming shop in my area) has my interest aside from the Creature Collection, which I mostly just bought because it had tabaxi (with a disgustingly bad picture) and fire nymphs (of which I've had my own version for years, also called 'flame maidens', so I found them novel). I am not desperate to spend my money, and I have some female friends in various parts of the world that I tend to spend a great deal of money on when I have a chance. I can't -lose- in this situation. But I really wouldn't mind mixing up my purchases between room heaters and teddy bears with some D&D-related purchases to encourage the game in the direction that I have interest in.

When it comes down to it, I have specific tastes; if someone caters to them, I'll pay, and I'll encourage my friends and family to do the same. If not, I'll be just as happy sending a cat plush across the planet.

This is exactly why I'm mad... The 3rd party publishers can't put out what I'm looking for. I've been following the Planes for nearly 20 years! I've been playing or readin about D&D since I was 6 and my uncle and his friends were being chased by the Wild Hunt in the Happy Hunting Grounds (dating myself here aren't I?)...

Then 12 years later I find Planescape! I devour the first boxed set in a day and move on to Well of Worlds, an adventure anthology. Lo and behold! There's an adventure in it where the PC's are chased by the Wild Hunt!!! Talk about re-enforcing my love of the game!

I was angry when Faction War came out... I felt it sucked all the soul out of my favorite setting. No... it merely changed it. It seems WotC is sucking the soul out of my favorite setting.

This log shows two bad things:

1) There's a designer or designers who would rather we played THEIR game than the one we've been playing for years; they're trying to discard modrons entirely rather than merely downplay them.

Actually, quite a few posts in this thread gave me the feeling that there are many DMs who feel compelled to play exactly what is printed out in the books...
