Planetouched Madness!

Very nice work, KM. I especially like the Tentacled Chaond. I'm not sure about the Cha penalty, though; Charisma can mean terrifying as much as it can mean beautiful. After all, the aboleth has Cha 18.

Also, for future reference, could you post some sample descendants for the varients? Like Scary Tieflings potentially having mezzoloth, malebranche, or hezrou blood, or whatever.

Still, it's very nice work.

Demiurge out.

I can hardly wait to see what he posts next! This is a great thread, do you have these on a website somewhere? They deserve to be, I think. And maybe a few intimations towards a campaign world where they can all interact? I can picture it now, a world that has been the battleground for many conflicts from between the planes, and perhaps one that had lived under the rule of extraplanar colonists for thousands of year at somepoint in the distant, or not so distant, past.

I've never really liked the Chaods, or their lawful counterparts. But then I never thought the slaad were a good representation of pure chaos either. But these variations help make them at least somewhat more palatible for me, giviong them flavor where before they had almost none.

Thanks.

You know what this thread needs?

A fuggin' update, that's what!

Let's go!

"Liquid" Chaond
Like a rushing tide of raw chaos, the liquid chaonds are said to be made of the raw, mutable stuff of randomness. Their skin constantly drips and oozes, seeming to run off their bones, and they're constantly sweating a jelly-like mucous. Their racial stats are as follows:

* Medium Sized. Base speed 30.
* Outsider (Chaos). Chaonds are outsiders with the chaos subtype. This grants them darkvision with a 60 ft. range.
* +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence. Liquid chaonds are can move gracefully, and are difficult to wound do to oozy bodies. This also makes their minds 'slippery' when they try to hold a thought
* Acid, Fire and Sonic Resistance 5. Liquid chaonds resist dissolving (since they're alread half-dissolved), burning (since they're too liquid to burn), and shattering (since very little of them is brittle).
* The ability to cast Acid Arrow once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. Liquid chaonds can squirt their own substance at you.
* +2 racial bonus to Balance and Escape Artist checks. Liquid chaonds control their own sloshign quite well.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Initial. Once poured into a roll, few desire to leave it.

"Mutable" Chaond
Constantly changing appearance, both subtly and overtly, a mutable chaond is a creature who's very face is molested by the forces of chaos. Their skin, hair, and eyes randomly change color, while they grow fangs, have elongated snouts, or pig noses (all within a minute of each other). Their appearance varies wildly from moment to moment, which makes them difficult to identify. Their racial stats are as follows:

* Medium Sized. Base speed 30.
* Outsider (Chaos). Chaonds are outsiders with the chaos subtype. This grants them darkvision with a 60 ft. range.
* +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, +2 Charisma, -2 Intelligence. Mutable chaonds are agile in both body and mind, and their constantly changing appearance makes them compelling when they wish to be. Still, their brains don't operate on logic as most mortals know it.
* Acid, Cold and Sonic Resistance 5. In addition to being resistant to dissolving and crystalization, their bodies are flexible enough to resist shattering by sound.
* The ability to cast Alter Self once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. Mutable chaonds change appearance quite readily.
* +2 racial bonus to Disguise and Tumble checks. With the ability to control their appearance and lengthen or shorten their limbs at will, mutable chaonds are hard to pin down in more ways than one.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Any. Mutable chaonds rail at being confined to a class.

"Stormy" Chaond
With all the fury and wrath of a natural blow comes the Stormy Chaond, a force of nature with their origins in tumultuous weather. They are often bright colors, energetic, with booming voices and a constant flicker of electricity about them. Their racial stats are as follows:

* Medium Sized. Base speed 30.
* Outsider (Chaos). Chaonds are outsiders with the chaos subtype. This grants them darkvision with a 60 ft. range.
* +2 Strength, +2 Constitution, -2 Intelligence, -2 Wisdom. Mighty and resilient, stormy chaonds rarely take the time to actually ponder what they are doing, and leap head-first into their dangers.
* Cold, Electric and Sonic Resistance 5. Stormy chaonds are resistant to the forces of inclement weather.
* The ability to cast Lightning Bolt once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. The storm runs pure in their viens.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Barbarian. Pure emotional rage.

One more time? Alright! :)

"Instinctive" Chaond
Reveling in their natural impulses of chaos and randomness, the instinctive chaonds are all about action, and revile having to think or plan things out. It is alien to them to *not* know the right thing to do when the time comes to do it -- they will know because of their natures. Instinctive chaonds are nervously flickering creatures, with twitches, nervous hops, and a very decisive mindeset. Their racial stats are as follows:

* Medium Sized. Base speed 30.
* Outsider (Chaos). Chaonds are outsiders with the chaos subtype. This grants them darkvision with a 60 ft. range.
* +2 Dexterity, +2 Wisdom, -2 Intelligence. Though logic and patterns are hard for an instinctive chaond to follow, they have an intuitive sense, and react quickly.
* Acid, Cold, and Sonic Resistance 5. Instinctive chaonds have the normal chaond resistances
* The ability to cast Augury once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. Instinctive chaonds have some remarkable divinitory powers.
* +2 racial bonus to Balance and Survival checks. Instinctive chaonds have a great balance, and know how to live on little.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Initial. Instinctive chaonds go with their first choice, often excluding the others.

"Cacophonic" Chaond
From the deapths of noise and sounds, rippling through the ordered air, the cacophonic chaonds represent the elemental force of noise and sonic energy unleashed. They are noisy creatures, speaking loudly in one or more registers, and punctuating their voices with animal noises or mimiced sounds. Their racial stats are as follows:

* Medium Sized. Base speed 30.
* Outsider (Chaos). Chaonds are outsiders with the chaos subtype. This grants them darkvision with a 60 ft. range.
* +2 Dexterity, +2 Constitution, -2 Wisdom. Their minds are filled with howling madness, but cacophonic chaonds are resilent and agile.
* Sonic Resistance 10. Cacophonic chaonds are used to the jarring effect of dissonant noise
* The ability to cast Sound Burst once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. Cacophonic chaonds can manifest their noise to painful levels.
* +2 racial bonus to Listen and Perform checks. An innate perception of sound and tone allows them to be very good at getting what they want out of it.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Bard. The use of sound is second nature to a cacophonic chaond.

"Wandering" Chaond
With an inspiration of journey and adventure, the wandering chaonds are creatures never content in one place. Long-limbed, caloused, and often covered in an aura of traveling dust, the wandering chaonds take this philosophy even at the close level -- their limbs, thuoghts, and words wander aimlessly accross their minds. Change is their bread and butter, fluidity their water, and the untraveled road their destiny.

While not entirely logical, wandering chaonds can survive, and are very receptive to what their body does.
* Cold and Fire Resistance 5. Wandering chaonds are resistant to the forces of extreme weather and temperatures.
* The ability to cast Haste once per day as a sorcerer of their character level. The faster one can travel, the better.
* +2 racial bonus to Survival checks. Wandering chaonds know how to live off the beaten trial.
* Level Adjustment +1
* Favored Class: Ranger. The wandering wilderness calls easily to a wandering chaond.

Very nice stuff, KM. I'll definitely be using these if I ever run a Planescape game. Have you considered sending these to the guys over at planewalker.com?

Anyway, a few comments.

I don't really like the name "Cultist Tiefling". It's a very minor thing, but it just doesn't seem quite right. I'd probably go with "Corruptor Tiefling", myself.

The spell of the Tentacled Chaond doesn't really fit. I can see where you're going with it, but it leaves me cold. I'd consider Entangle, Random Action, or Frog's Tounge (from Magic of Faerun) instead of Detect Thoughts.

I'd consider knocking the Stormy Chaond's spell ability down to Shocking Grasp, and increase its stats and resistances a bit. Lightning Bolt is a pretty powerful spell for an ECL +1 race, IMO, even if it about the only reason they have the level adjustment.

If you're intending these for 3.5, the Wandering Chaond is fine. If they're for 3.0, however, the Haste ability is a bit too powerful. I might also consider increasing their base speed to 35' or 40' and dropping all elemental resistances.

All those changes work just fine. :) It's mostly a matter of taste and style, I guess. There's nothing wrong with the changes, but I like the way they sit now. So, whatever you have fun with, go for. :)

And these will eventually be up on Stuff, Etc., along with my Planescape 3e matierial. I want the PW/PS3e berks to stick out their 3e rules first, though. :)
