Played my first Call of Cthulhu Game Last Night

Dying was never so much fun... My Encounters DM was planning on running a Call of Cthulhu one-shot with his regular group and since we were constantly talking Lovecraft at one point, invited me. I went and created my character on Friday, choosing to play a police detective.

After getting there and meeting with the others, as there was only one other player there out of the other six that I knew, we started.

We were all friends of our hostess's character, who had inherited her great aunt's house in Kentucky (we all lived in Colorado)

We arrive there to find that the house is a mess, several old and wet items litter the first floor of the house. The dentist in the group manages to climb over some of the rubble into the library and is attacked in there by a simian rat creature. She panics and scares it away with a gunshot, leading to those still in the house (two members of the group went back to town to fetch supplies to make the cleaning easier) to race to her aid. We couldn't get to her through the mess, but she was able to climb out.

We all thought logically that she was simply attacked by a large rat or even a racoon and was frightened and continued on with our work after patching up her bite wound (no mention was made by us that the bite mark looked surprisingly human...)

To shorten this up a bit, we later found a book--written in German--that turned out to be the diary of the "Witch of Michitonkwa", containing several rituals. At the same time, one of the party members heads out to the car to get something and is attacked by two men, one of whom he had a little trouble with at a resteraunt at the beginning. One misses him and hits the car, causing the hand to just collapse in goo. He goes catatonic while one of his own hands go numb from the shock of seeing it.

During the fight, three other party members--the hacker, the dentist and the one who had the dream--go a bit crazy from seeing the zombies take shots that would normally drop a human. We manage to win the fight without casualties and decide to get the heck out of town. We're stopped when we run into the sheriff and his deputy we ran into at the very beginning of the game who said that the people in the next town over (and right between us and freedom) were going crazy and cutting phone and power wires.

We fall back to the house and barricade it, determining to go to an island that I had discovered earlier in the the day. The hacker manages to get online and confirm that there was a shack on the island.

The next morning, with thankfully no activity other than a scout, we set out on the lake to head for the island. During the night, we discovered in the diary that an old entity named Glaaki was living in the lake and found a ritual to enchant a spear or harpoon to banish him back into another dimension.

The next morning, we get to the cabin and actually see Glaaki in all of his hideousness, along with several followers on the opposite shore sacrificing their latest captures to their god. We also see a motorboat beginning to head towards the island. As for seeing Glaaki, only the deputy failed his sanity roll and he raced into the house.

Three of us who knew the ritual began casting it in the basement with the simian rat, who turned out to be relatively good, while myself, the sheriff, the criminal who was attacked first and the dentist stayed up there to hold off the zombies. Three of them with rifles begin to open fire on us as the deputy eats his gun, while the rest rush to the windows of the cabin. In the firefight, both myself and the NPC sheriff are killed.

The ritual complete and the first wave dispatched, the rest of the group race to Glaaki's position in the lake. They reach him and shoot him with the enchanted spear, causing a large whirlpool in the middle of the lake. The boat overturns thanks to a botched piloting check and the group must swim their way out. I'm sitting there on the edge of my seat as they try to swim their way out. One person gets out easily while the others find it difficult. One by one, people begin dying as Glaaki hits them in its death throes. Three of them end up dying this way as the fourth keeps almost making it only to continue being sucked away by the whirlpool. He eventually fails in the last round of the whirlpool and drowns as he is dispatched with Glaaki. The hacker manages to make it and swims safely to shore in the now calm lake.

Then, since we had posted footage of the creatures online and sent them to the CDC, out comes the black helicopters and insignia-less soldiers who come and detain the two survivors...

It was a fun game, especially after I had already died and was watching to see what happened to the others. The frantic swim was likely the most exciting part of it, watching the others pray to succeed. Also, at a little over 7 hours (including one player having to create his character), it was the longest RPG game session I have ever been in. It was a really good introduction, in my opinion, to the game style and the system.
