Player/DM Issues: Please Help!

Of course, hindsight is an exact science.
I agree, I think gfunk got hosed on the call but theirs no "Instant Reply" in D&D.

Gfunk, if given a small but bigger hint would you have heaved too and retreated to distance? In all honesty it's hard too honestly answer it cause hindsight is 20/20 in all. I would discus it with the DM so it wouldn’t happen again, but at the same time think honestly if it would have changed your PCs decision.

In 3.0 core rules, there is no explicit Knowledge (undead). In the 3.5e SRD, knowledge of undead types is specifically listed as being under Knowledge (religion).

Note that in Defenders of the Faith, the prestige class Hunter of the Dead has 5 ranks of knowledge (undead) as a prerequisite. Mind you, it's a splat book, but it at least explains where I got my opinion from. :)

I rolled a natural 19 the other night in a game and that only gave me minimal knowledge compared to someone who rolled a natural 16 but had a +7 in that field.
No that makes much more sense than as the ranks mean something. I believe the confusion earlier was on the perceived uselessness of ranks.

He should have given you a description of at least one of the monsters special abilities, probably more. The Knowledge skills are there for a reason.

That and the fact I'd think with that kind of role you'd get a deeper insight than just "Gee, it has worms on it..."

I'm gonna break away from popular opinion here and say that the DM may not have been too far off with the info he gave. Depending on how rare the scions of Kyuss are in the campaign, they may be unknown enough that you may have needed a 20 or higher to know anything really relevant about them, or to have even heard of them. Also, I would think that worms, maggots, etc. would be common with some forms of undead such as zombies or huecuvas or whatnot. Maybe the fact that worms were specifically pointed out was a hint that they might be important.

Right Tweg, but come on. Undead that have some meat left to them OFTEN have worms. Or maggots. Doesn't always mean they are Scions of Kyuss. :p

If this is the case, then the DM should have simply said, "You know little or nothing of these creatures, but you can see that they have worms crawling out of their eyes and noses", which, btw, should not have required a spot check as close to them as they were apparently standing, so there would have been no need to roll for that either, unless the character was suffering some sort of eye trouble.
