Player has a super rogue, DM needs help.

I screwed up and gave one of my players (Rogue 8/Shadowdancer 1) slippers of spider climbing and a ring of chameleon power.

He has about 12 ranks in Hide and Move Silently and a Dex of 20.

Now he has taken a level of Shadowdancer. I ok'ed this before I really thought of the ramifications.

The problem is now he just walks (or spiderclimbs) around and basicly has improved invisibility all the time.

Suggestions?

I assume your talking about the Hide in Plain sight ability. One little thing to mention is that it does take a standard action to activate it because Supernatural abilities do that. Plus he isn't improved invisible. As soon as he attacks, he'll be in the open.
Of course if he has boots of speed or potions of haste, you're almost guarenteed to be screwed :D.

I doubt that helped but hope it helped.

Tata.

tell the PC that you screwed up and by their having that combination of things- they are a headache for you.

so sit him down and tell him- can you give something up?
whether it is the boots, or PrC, or somethig where it would take his power lvl down just a tad...

The problem is, he Hides (in plain sight) and then sneaks up on the enemy. He gets the sneak attacks then uses a five foot step to back off. The next round, he hides again.

Most creatures can't ever find him. His Hide is +25 or so.

I need a way to get rid of that ring.

Ha! A possible solution:

Hide in plain sight = Standard Action
Hide (the skill) = Move Equivalent?

I could just rule that Hiding in Plain Sight is actually a Full-round Action. :D

If all he does is five foot step away, why aren't they 5' stepping and attacking? Or grappling? Or traveling with friends who can do that?

Also, getting rid of the ring is fairly easy, just hit him with a Mordenkainen's Disjunction. :) Actually there are other way:

Where did he get it from? Could someone come looking for it? If he bought it, what are the chances he was screwed and the thing only works for two months (long enough for the seller to escape)?

You could always kill him and have the people strip him naked before the party finds him. Trying to sneak up on something with blindsight would allow that. Or disguised undead (who are immune to crits).

Use creatures with the Scent and/or Blindsight abilities. As for getting rid of the ring, have a much higher level NPC mug him (how do you think those high level rogues get all of that treasure?:D )

that is bad cause the PC may feel cheated that you are enacting and enforcing a house rule that is specifically aimed at keeping his power level down. This may cause him to feel that it is awar between the player and Dm... which is bad for game chemistry.

My Dm does that to me all the time (make new house rules to keep me from doing things thathe doesnt want me to) and itr sucks. basically says, you have not creative avenue- you can only do what I say you can...

1. have him unconcious and in need of help...his buddies may have a very hard time finding him

2 make it so the other p.c.'s can't see him too, that makes fireballs and lightning that much more fun

3. what good for the goose... have him run into something that he can't see

4. there is bound to be somebody who sees this who is gonna make it their mission to rid him of this combo, if only to have it themselves

5. remember- spider climb is at half movement rate

The Answer to Your Prayers is...

a Vampire! Have your PC somehow tick off a vampire and have to deal with the consequences. Think about it:

1) Domination-Makes rogues with weak Will saves easy prey.
2) Energy Drain-Nobody likes to lose levels.
3) Blood Drain-Where did all my CON go?
4) Children of the Night-I bet they'll find your rogue.
5) Gaseous Form & Spider Climb-No place for your rogue to run and hide.
6)Spot, Listen and Search-+8 racial bonus

All in all, your rogue will probably lose a level or two (bye-bye Shadowdancer!) and if he is really unlucky, some serious CON. He'll be hating life before you know it...:D
