Player powergaming: mea culpa

Okay, here's my confession - I powergame as a player and as a DM. And I help other players to powergame too, and optimize their characters with powerful magic items, feats, PrCs, etc. And then we all roleplay the heck out of our characters and have a blast. Man, I love this game!

I tend to do this too as a DM. When I see an optimum thing for a given player, I flag it to him, and 95% of the time he goes for it.

Sometimes, he just doesn't feel like it, even if it isn't the ultimate best thing to do, and I don't push the issue. It's HIS character.

I'm sorry but the original poster's character is so not powergaming. Powergaming as I understand it is when you do things like Cleric 7 with Divine Metamagic: Persistant Spell and persist a Divine Power and use Spikes and Magical Vestments with Bead of Karma to do insane damage and have super defences all day long.

Or abuse Holy Word series of spells with domain abilities, ioun stones and bead of karma to instantly wipe out all your opposition.

Or in Epic abuse Innate Miracle to spontaneously cast any arcane spell 7th level or lower .. every round ... all day ... every day.

My name is Halivar, and I'm a powergamer.

Hi Halivar!

Okay, here's my confession - I powergame as a player and as a DM. And I help other players to powergame too, and optimize their characters with powerful magic items, feats, PrCs, etc. And then we all roleplay the heck out of our characters and have a blast.

I run my game on a sliding scale based on the actions of the players. If they keep it simple then I do the same. If they go for the max then I meet them head on. I let them set the power scale and we have a blast either way.

Of course, the players rarely keep it simple so the game gets played with the volume turned up!

It's all good to me

Man, I love this game!

Oh Yea! :D

I am playing a character I never thought I would stoop down to play: a Sorceror Paladin.

I really like him. He's a Pal 2/ Sorc 8, Practised Spellcaster, and 3 draconic feats. I have a +6 Cha item and +5 prot cloak (no other items to speak of though, AC 18). It's kinda obscene when you come to think of it. I'm raining death from above (Draconic Flight) all the time, and the few times critters launch something at me, I make my save.
It's not like you're doing anything truly obscene. This sounds more like "sensible allocation of resources" than any true powergaming.
To add insult to injury, my next 5 levels will be in the Fatespinner PrC (CA).

That said, I did make an effort to make the whole a coherent thing. I play him as a descendent of dragons, his god is Bahamut, and I took the Draconic Breath feat just for flavor (my spells do more damage and are more efficient). So he's basically a holy arcanist of bahamut, human, but with golden hair (gold dragon heritage), forked tongue, and draconic eyes (slit pupils).

No matter what you guys will tell me, I still intend to play him, but I have to say I kept telling myself "cheese" while rolling him...

Your PC isn't that powerful, and he's got some personality. He's not cheese by a huge margin.

Well, from reading these boards for, well... since there were the boards, I got the impression that going for the paladin's charisma to ST's boost for a sorceror was an eye roller. Quite a few times actually.

In fact, I am somewhat astonished that no-one in this thread did. Everyone gave me a pat on the back and said "Good job, you go girl !" (I'm not actually a girl, it's just an expression, you know, "You go girl !" like when you give a thumbs up to someone... I mean... ).

Well I'm glad. I can now play this character while standing straight.

Still, there's GOT to be some peeps here that want to confess. Go ahead, we won't judge you. You will feel sooooo much better after.

Well, you know, people say silly things when they're drfunk.

Powergaming

Well, everything is good and i'm a little munchkin quite myself too.I love finding combos and varius stuff, mixing them up.But that's it...I cannot understand the logic behind the -Little bit of that, xmmm that and i'll take and 3 lvls because i like it-...that's not a way to make a character.I don't say that you do that but depending on the experience many players do it...come to think of it,i'll take a lvl monk for AC ,a lvl or two pally for saves, xmz which prestige was the one with super BAB,mega saves, umber abilities???...hey DM can i take any mutation??? ...MERCY ...again i say i'm not saying it for you but many,if not the most "THINK" like this....Your character in the end has his own personality....think like him....and for last the most ineffective, obsolete, easy to die/drop and boring characters are the ones without background or motivations...not the ones without buffs.... :)
(But paladin????mercy...the worst kind....DEATH TO PALADINS :) :) :) :)
...i have few of them chasing me... so for all the pally fanatics don't shoot :)

You utter powergamer! How could you!

My Paladin2/Sorcerer8 has only a +4 Cloak of Charisma, because before CA there were no non-cloak magic items of resistance. I had to make do with what I found, and what my DM allowed my to buy/order/create.

I did briefly take one level of Spellsword though, but as my character was kicked out of Heironeous' knighhood after his Sorcerous power manifested, at least *I* had a good RP-reason for taking it. ;)

Sigh, since the Red Dragon killed him, he's back to just a Pal2/Sor8 again.

Did you create him as a Pal2/Sor8, or go through the low levels as well?
