Players misplacing PC equipment

Sounds like a plot hook to me. E.g., the PCs accidentally forgot it somewhere, or someone might have stolen it from the PCs, etc.

If it's not written down, it's gone. Period.

I'm a hard-ass. ;)

i still have the assprints on my spare bed to prove it...

ditto. but i do constantly remind the players to update their sheets and send me copies.

I feel like somebody just performed some thread necromancy on something from the 80s. Have you guys heard of this cool new invention called the internet?

In every group I have been part of since the advent of 3.0, emails have been used to some extent. Usually a Yahoo group is set up, but at the least the players send updated copies of characters to the DM between sessions. On the rare occasion that someone has forgotten a character sheet it has simply been a matter of locating the email or file and printing a new copy. I think once the host had a problem with his printer and the player had to copy down his PC from the screen.

The internet, for me, has meant the end of lost character sheets, and the end of sheets with holes from erasing and rewriting hit points, and ruined sheets from spilled beverages. I print a new, fresh character sheet almost every session, but hang on to the old one if the session ended while my PC was at less than full HP, or had used spells, etc. for the day.

It sounds as if the Bag of Holding has become a Bag of Devouring.

For this situation I would have NO problems saying 'tough.' If the players can't keep track of it, then too bad. Of course, if there was something in there that the players recall that you, the GM, also recall then I suppose that could be salvaged.

Or at the same time you could put a whole new list of goodies in there and explain that the magic in the Bag of Holding was rather unstable and it switched with some other adventuring party.

Sounds like the infamous halfling theif Fubbly McQuickfingers has struck again!

I would have the equiptment lost or gone for the simple reason that the players seem to have been carrying it around without anyone bothering to write it on their character sheet or take the weight penalties.

If it was suppose to be in a wagon or something and this wasn't a chronic problem with the party though I'd say let them reconstruct the list.

It must be refreshing to hear that part of the scenario. :)

Do you let the Players "reconstruct" the equipment list? Or do you say, "Well, I guess you lost it."?

(. . .)

What is your default/general ruling on this kind of situation?

Not on the character sheet? Not in the character's possession. Oh, well... ;)

There's no in-game explanation for a player misplacing a sheet of paper with names of stuff on it, then finding it again. It was an OOC goof. Just retcon the equipment back into the game, IMO.

TFB. If it ain't written down, you ain't got it.

Also, if one person is recording the loot acquired during an adventure, that person has all the loot. If you want to give it to someone else, have them record it on their sheet.

Finally, if the DM (that's me) looks at your sheet and can't figure out what an entry is, it's gone. This is actually the origin of my being hardnosed on equipment. I've had too much sloppy book-keeping where (as an example) the PC is being targeted by a thief and I make all the rolls to spot the given item, pick pocket it, etc. and when I announce the PC notices the item is gone, they say "You can't do that, it's on my horse," or some such. This, despite the fact that it's written on their sheet, between their sword and their shield w/o any special notes beside it. Thus, the "your paperwork reflects your reality" rule.

But no one has the sheet the Player gave them last week, and no one has a note on their character sheet about having the bag.

What is your default/general ruling on this kind of situation?
For us, it's "Well, I guess you lost it."

I don't put up with any of that :):):):):):):):). The players are (at the very least) responsible for their own character sheets and equipment. If they botch even that little bit of responsibility, too bad for them. Our strict policy is: "If you don't have it recorded, you don't have it."

(But that's just us.)

Now, what if during the next week, one of the Players finds the equipment list (was left at home last time) -- does their PC have it now? [Assume there is no cheating of any kind.]

Do you let the items back in? Or do you say no?
Our group would allow the items back in (given your assumption that it's the original list), once the list is brought to the gaming table.
