Players: Your Dream Campaign?

I have two dream campaigns: One has already been well described by others on here, the gritty urban Thieves World-type campaign.

The other would be a nobles campaign, set amongst rival noble houses (or even merchant houses, if the merchants were the nobility). Lots of intrigue, even swashbuckling adventure, and a good mix of combat, problem-solving, and interacting with other PCs and NPCs.

But either campaign needs to have a good, far-reaching story arc and well-developed characters.

A fairly gritty self-consistant world wher the campaign spanned years of game time and allowed the characters to get to reasonably high levels (teens) and postions within society. Then the characters children would form the next low level party although with perks from the parents who would basically be retired except for major metaplot happenings.

If you had the perfect GM on retainer and s/he was creating a campaign to your specifications, what would you wish for?

Me: Low-level urban swords-and-sorcery, rogues involved in heists and hijinks in and around a wretched hive of scum and villainy, a la Lankhmar, Arenjun, or Sanctuary, with occasional forays off to foreign lands in search of fabled treasures. Double points if the city is a seaport, allowing for piratey goodness and opportunities to sail off for adventure.

You: ...?

I have run something much like your dream game. It was the best D&D I ever ran.

My first choice would be a game with simple fun mechanics where I get to do cool stuff and be the hero for a change. Frantic action, magic duels, social challenges and pure swashbuckling action appeal to me

If not that -- shrug I'd like exactly what The Gneech suggested

I've said for years that I want to play in a CSI: Waterdeep game.

I'm having a fantastic time in DM Matt's Heroes Inc. PBP, which isn't quite CSI, but comes close enough to make me very happy :)

I'm giving serious thought to running a Belgariad game using Iron Heroes. But I'm so busy at work just now, it won't be for a while!

I've always liked the high magic, high fantasy games....but I do have a fondness for Indiana Jones style tomb raids/global intrigue type games.

Oh, and always a good balance between combat and intrigue. Both extremes disinterest me. :)

It would have to be a campaign set in Dark Sun, with the GM able to capture that dark and dangerous, the-guy-next-door-could-be-a-psionic-master, high-intrigue and brutal combat type of game.

The ability for the players to really have an impact on life in the game, and to be able to read about the after effects of the party's adventuring by reading short blurb, ala WotC "Sharn Inquisitive" newspaper headlines, to get that feeling of a dynamic, evolving world.

As others have said though, it really boils down to a great GM and players that are involved, interested in their characters and willing to engage the table with some classic RPing.

You sold me :)

That or a game where I get to be a wandering loner badazz mofo like Solomon Kane.

It wouldn't actually be a campaign world, but a supplement on how to comingle various D20 campaigns to maximum efficiency and get the best RPing experience from it. I like to mix up campaigns, worlds and ideas, so if I had to pick one it would be Chanak.

Setting - probably swords & sorcery or Tolkienesque high fantasy, though swashbuckling space opera would be great too. Start low, progress through a long-term game to be movers & shakers/save the universe/usurp the throne. Much less magic than standard 3e D&D - eg OGL Conan; or Midnight but without the PHB spells that unbalance the setting. 1e AD&D magic was ok for a "high magic" setting. Not too much square-counting and metagame tactics, real-world tactics is good.
