Playing a Bard for the first time - need suggestions

Aopy

First Post
Okay - so we are starting up a new campaign and I have decided that I want to play a bard, something that I have never done before. I have one major problem and that is I don't really know how to play a bard. Where should my stats go and what skills and feats should be selected??? And then there is spells??

Anyway, here are my stats: (feel free to suggest rearrangments)

STR 15
DEX 14
CON 12
INT 11
WIS 10
CHA 17

I choose a human for the benifit of added skill points and a bonus feat. I was also leaning towards a fighting bard as the party lacks a real tank. We have an elven archer fighter and a human fighter with a 10 strength (don't ask).

Well - all suggestions welcome and appreciated.

If skill points are an issue, considered raising INT and lowering STR. You can always use a light weapon or a rapier and take the weapon finesse feat since you have a decent DEX. As a bard you will most likely be playing pick-up. They have the middle attack progression and so-so magic. They are best as a support fighter and back-up magic user. They also do the sneaking in a party without a rogue.

My advice is: don't be afraid to spread yourself out, that's what bards are best at.

I'd swap STR and CHA. You only *really* need a 16 to access all the Bard spells. Bump it at level 12 or so.

Yeah 16 Cha but put your Dex higher and your Str lower - stick with missile weapons for combat.
Remember you are a 'support character' and a more effect staying out of harms way and able to help with songs, spells and missile fire. The dex also helps for all those stealth actions which cover the 'rougish' part of your nature. And keep Diplomacy, Gather info etc well supported

Yeah, but a high STR makes for a better archer. Adds to damage with STR bows. Even better than specialization, because it extends beyond the 30 barrier.

Unless you really want to go into melee combat (remeber, d6 HD, medium BAB, no Sneak Attack, no Cleric bonus spells on every combat thing)
Str 11
Dex15
Con12
Int15
Wis10
Cha17

Feats:
Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot should be the first combat feats. (Precise Shot is important, you do not want to stop shooting when the fighters engange in melee, do you?)
Rapid Shot gives you a cheap extra attack.
Everything else, I think, is really up to you. Maybe Dodge, Mobility, Shot on the Run (well, in the far future :) )

Weapons: If you are not an Elf, you will have to use the bard free profiency for Composite Longbow (or, if you are a small creature, Composite Shortbow).

Skills:
Bluff, Diplomacy, Sense Motive, Use Magic Device are really important Bard Skills - well, and obviously, Perform.
Move Silently, Hide can be great - you can accompony the rogue when he has to scout, and he will feel much safer than...
Concentration is really important if you want to go into melee and still be able to safely cast spells. It might be not so important if you stay on distance to targets - but remember, enemies can decide to close in...

Spells:
Consider at least one of the Cure Spells. If you decide to take a higher level one, this might be very useful in later combats (Cure Lights do not help much in high level combats, but the wands are cheap)
Try to take Enchantments that are difficult to reproduce by skills or your Bardic Music Abilities. (Charm Person - Diplomacy, Suggestion - Bardic Music Fascinate/Suggestion and so on)
Greater Magic Weapon is a very important spell if you want to shoot arrows all the day. And Haste is always a good spell.
Some of the Divinitation Spells the Bard get can be very useful, too.
Having some Scrolls around can be very useful - with enough ranks in Use Magic Device, it is even unimportant what kind of scroll (arcane, divine, wizard only spell? Who cares!)

Multiclassing:
Not really a good idea, since you lose your spell progression. And though the Bard does only get up to 6th level spells, he gets many useful spells.
If you still want to multiclass (only a single class gets boring to you, eh?), consider Rogue (skills + sneak attack) or Ranger (becoming even more independet from others, Wilderness Lore, Track).
If you`re still looking for a concept: How about Skald = Bard+Barbarian!

Other things:
Bards can do well, even if they are alone - they have a decent skill and spell list. Bards will always shine in any Diplomacy Type encounter, and you should be prepared for some nice roleplaying oppertunities.
While the other guys might kill the most foes, sling the powerfulst spell, it is the bard with his charisma that will get the chicks :) (Charisma 17+? And Bluff? And Diplomacy? And Sense Motive?)
It might also be you that has the job of holding the group together, and compensate for the lack of anything, especially style and good behaviour. :)
Do not forget your Bardic Knowlege Ability, it will give you many useful information - and you might use it for roleplaying setting up tactics: "This reminds me of Uthgard, the Barbarian, when he had to attack the Orc Camps on Mount Thalatos..."

Some more or less experimental things - some of them I saw others do, unfortunately, my lack of skills prevent me from doing such things..:

If you can sing, rhyme or do similar things not only inplay but also offplay, you might be able to enhance the fun even more - for everyone. If you use background music, you might consider having some songs ready that you can play in the CD player or Cassete Recorder, so you maybe do not have to sing yourself.

If you have some spare time outside of your roleplaying events, you could even consider writing a kind of ballad or song, that reports of the heroic adventures of your group. If you do not meet often for roleplaying, this can also be helpful for everybody getting back into character and in the story of the adventure.

The bard I am currently playing started with the following stats:

Str 9
Dex 12
Con 12
Int 18
Wis 6
Cha 19

As you can see, she has a very low score in Wisdom (which doesn't hamper her much but which is fun to play) and comparatively low scores in Str and Dex. Therefore she hasn't used a weapon since ages and relies totally on her spells (and she gets loads of bonus spells with her high charisma) and social and perform skills. If you like to play a bard this way, don't bother putting high scores into Str or Dex, just become the supporter behind the front lines. Take spells like invisibility, haste, etc. Then you can also decide to take levels in the Virtuoso prestige class. It has a bad BAB but as you won't use weapons much, it doesn't matter.

I wouldn't play a bard as the fighting tank. This is the role for several other classes. Just try to bump up the fighters you have in your party. And don't forget, if you put a lot of skill ranks into Bluff, Diplomacy and Intimidate, you often won't have to fight to overcome an encounter.

I play bards..and prefer weapon finesse. I also suggest chain shirt and shield as well as a ranged weapon. Also I agree at least keep a decent stock of learning heal spells but sonce I like to play them I get a lot of "showy" spells and have Caltros buy mirrors and expensive clothes etc....gotta look good! Also I always get MW instruments. But prefer comedy and satire as my true weapon of choice :p .

Have fun, I really enjoy it and am using Monte Cook's alt bard this time around.

This is what I would suggest if you are looking to be an archer-bard.

Human Bard 1
CR 1; Medium Humanoid; 5'x5'/5';
HD 1d6+1; hp 7;
Init +3; Spd 30 ft/x4;
AC 13(+3 dex);

SV Fort +1, Ref +5, Will +2; AL N;
Str 10(+0), Dex 17(+3), Con 12(+1), Int 14(+2), Wis 11(+0), Cha 15(+2);
Skills & Feats: Concentration¹ +5, Hide¹ +7, Listen¹ +4, Move Silently¹ +7, Perform¹ +6, Swim¹ +3.
Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot"

If you are looking more for a melee bard I would go this way and pick up spring attack when you can:

Human Bard 1
CR 1; Medium Humanoid; 5'x5'/5';
HD 1d6; hp 6;
Init +2; Spd 30 ft/x4;
AC 12(+2 dex);

SV Fort +0, Ref +4, Will +2; AL N;
Str 17(+3), Dex 14(+2), Con 11(+0), Int 12(+1), Wis 10(+0), Cha 15(+2);
Skills & Feats: Concentration¹ +4, Hide¹ +6, Listen¹ +2, Move Silently¹ +6, Perform¹ +6.
Dodge, Mobility

When I am not DMing I play a bard, so does my wife. We have a blast. She is is the melee type and I am the archer type. With her rapier of speed, weapon finesse, and improved cirtical she does nearly as much damage as the tank in the party.

Good luck and have fun!
