I'm goin g to play a Sorcerer and was thinking of picking up the Incantatrix prestige class. Has anyone tried it? Is it good? The thing is, I will need to get the Education feat at 1st level cuz it needs knowldeg planes. Is it worth it? Anyone have recommendations?

It's broken. Improved Metamagic is gruesome. (Well, until the revision. I've heard that you won't be able to stack metamagic feats anymore.)

I don't know about that. It is the tenth level ability (or is it 9th). I have seen many epic feats in prestige classes. Are they all broken too?

It's the 8th level ability; yes, it's broken, even though many other PrCs are not. The sheer boost the spell saving throw DCs from the Empowered fox's cunning alone makes the PrC problematic.

Well, thank you for your opinion.

Does anyone have anything POSITIVE to say about the class? Any suggestions?

(I don't even have, or intend to get, Fox's Cunning BTW. I have never seen buff spells as worthwhile, even at 1 hr/level)

The potential for rules whorage is kinda awesome from what Ive seen when one was/is still played. Depends on your game really, if you are playing something where you are expected to take on major magical threats (and live!) then they are almost a necessity.

Thresher's rating
10/10 for rules whoreage
7/10 for games where PC's are meant to be damn tough
2/10 for people that just want a nice, normal game of D&D
1/10 for the DM respecting you the next day for being a metagaming 'ho and wrecking his bad guys.

Though what a lot of DM's forget is that these things can be NPC's as well... and oh the rivers of tears, tattered character sheets they could leave behind. :D

Yes, I am a rules whore

I have an incantrix/archmage wizard, and yes, they are broken. The reason they are broken though is because of the fox's cunning thing. This has been nerfed by 3.5 so that empowering fox's cunning doesn't work (it no longer has a variable effect). So this particular problem is solved.

I have heard the rumor that you can't stack metamagic in 3.5, but I have not heard any actual sources for this rumor, so no official word as yet. I would not be suprised, but I think this is a(nother) stupid and unneccesary nerf if it is true

On the other hand, being able to stack empowers on spells like fireball and summon monster is not really that inherantly broken. Yes, a 7th level fireball cast by an incantrix has an average of 105 points of damage, but at that level, there are ALOT of things that can take the hit.

The bigger issue with this PrC is the fact that you can easily make unbeatable DC's. However, since this has been nerfed, I don't really see any major problems with it.
