Li Shenron: Because if it said "they cannot, however, hide within 10' of their own shadow," they would never be able to use the ability. (You are always within 10' of your shadow.)

It just means that you need a shadow that is not cast by you to hide with.

Yes, I see, I meant that the purpose of that sentence is basically that your own shadow doesn't count for using this ability. I was pointing out that it speaks about hiding IN, while everone seems to believe that HIPS lets you hide in plain LIGHT (which is very different than in plain SIGHT), while I'm left alone on my position...:(

spawn?

The hide in plain sight might need to be clarified, but I was more
concerned with the "Army of shadows" one can get if one's shadow companions can create spawn. Has this been fixed in an errata or FAQ?

My personal take on "hide in plain sight" is to treat it like invisibility, if there is a shadow within 10'. Hmm...A continual flame spell cast on something the shadow dancer is wearing could seriously ruin her afternoon... :)

The sentence should read "you cannot use your own shadow for this ability" or something to that effect.

Its a magical ability, you don't need to be in a shadow to use it.

I give up

The original intent was to allow them to hide in a shadow nearby (within 10
feet). The note about their own shadow is to make it clear that a
shadowdancer does not "always have a shadow nearby." (Which would almost
always be the case if he could hide in his own shadow.)

Subject: Shadowdancer original design concept

Hello, Mr.Cook.

A recente debate started in a ENWorld thread about the Shadowdancer ability
known as "Hide in Plain Sight"; essentially, people are discussing if the
original idea of the ability was to let the Shadowdancer hide inside a
shadow large enough (within a shadow by at least 10ft) or to hide in plain
light but with a shadow nearby (within 10ft of a shadow). The wording in the
SRD seems to suggest the latter.

A following sentence indicates that Shadowdancers "cannot hide in their own
shadows", whose purpose is clear but doesn't explain the previous ambiguity.

I believe that only the original author can enlighten us about what Hide in
Plain Sight was originally meaning. :)
