I give up

The original intent was to allow them to hide in a shadow nearby (within 10
feet). The note about their own shadow is to make it clear that a
shadowdancer does not "always have a shadow nearby." (Which would almost
always be the case if he could hide in his own shadow.)

Subject: Shadowdancer original design concept
Hello, Mr.Cook.
A recente debate started in a ENWorld thread about the Shadowdancer ability
known as "Hide in Plain Sight"; essentially, people are discussing if the
original idea of the ability was to let the Shadowdancer hide inside a
shadow large enough (within a shadow by at least 10ft) or to hide in plain
light but with a shadow nearby (within 10ft of a shadow). The wording in the
SRD seems to suggest the latter.
A following sentence indicates that Shadowdancers "cannot hide in their own
shadows", whose purpose is clear but doesn't explain the previous ambiguity.
I believe that only the original author can enlighten us about what Hide in
Plain Sight was originally meaning.
