Point Blank Shot Spells

two

First Post
as per t+b, pb-shot stacks with ranged touch attack spells, like lesser X orb.

Is this per orb (i assume), +1/+1 per?

The feat in t+b that adds +2 to dam. with ranged energy attacks, this stacks with pb-shot for total +1/+3 per orb?

thanks for clarification

the feat is Spell Specialization, and i do think it would stack with Point Blank Shot (nothing 'official' to back that up, though...)

and welcome to the boards two! :D

Hello hello.

As I understand it, the Point Blank Shot and Specialization feats (be they for mundane or magic purposes) apply separately to each attack roll made, and do stack.

So, for example, were there a spell that allowed you to fire multiple blasts of energy using a single attack roll, you'd apply the damage bonus on top of the total damage of all missiles.

For a spell like, say, Flame Arrow, you'd apply the full bonuses to each individually rolled attack.

Bear in mind that the various Elemental Orb (and Flame Arrow for that matter) spells use the "energy missile" specialization feat. You can't apply that to rays or melee touches.

Ok thanks

oh that's right, energy missle specialization. +2 to damage per missle (rolled attack).

As I recall, weapon focus (energy missle) is required for specialization (again, like fighter's version with weapons).

So within 30' a dedicated lesser orb thrower is doing 1d8 +3 and has +2 to hit (+1 pbshot, +1 focus) per orb.

Magic missle is STILL a better spell, even after buring 3 feats! But that's another story.

got it.

The orb spells are to be treated like shuriken for purposes of sneak attacks, etc. Does Point Blank shot apply to all the shuriken or just the first? I used to know, but now I forget. Whatever the answer is, that's the answer for orb spells.

Edit: From the SRD:

The description of the shuriken in the Player’s Handbook
says you can’t apply your Strength bonus on shuriken
damage. Can you use the +2 damage bonus from
specialization if you’re specialized with shuriken?

Yes, you can apply the damage bonus for specialization in
shuriken, but only if the target is within 30 feet. Only the first
shuriken you throw in an attack gets the bonus damage. As
noted before, only one shuriken thrown in an attack has any
real degree on precision; the other one or two are just along for
the ride.

I think, based on this, only the first orb gets the bonuses.

Point Blank would apply to all attacks within 30 feet. the sneak attack bonus damage would only apply to the first attack (IIRC :) )

From the Tome and Blood FAQ:

Under the Spell Specialization feat in Tome and Blood,
it says that ray and energy missile spells get a +2 damage
modifier. In the case of multiple missile spells like lesser
fire orb, is this modifier treated as +2 damage per missile?

The +2 damage bonus applies to the first missile in the
volley attack you make, not to each spell.

Oh good gracious.

tell me it ain't so?

They have made a feat chain (spell focus, spell specialization) that burns two hard-to-come-by wizard/sorcerer feats, and gives a net...

+1 to hit, +2 to damage for a very limited selection of spells?

+2 damage as in, that's it, that's the total possible amount, just +2 to damage? (and save for half! yeah! that's +1 to damage after a save, for two feats!)

Sheesh.

Talk about all feats not being equal!

Well, if they allowed that to stack they open the door for rules lawyers trying to get multiple sneak attack damage from the various orbs.

true, but

re sneak attack craziness -

true but, as it stands, these two feats rank right up there with... or down there rather... with... shoot, I can't think of any opther feats quite so bad (off hand). Particularly when you are talking about wiz/sorcerer feats.

I'm trying to make them viable, but it's just so painful. They seem to be NPC feats...at best.
