Poll: 1E or 2E?

If you had a yen for old school AD&D, would you rather run a game in 1E or 2E?

  • I'd run 1E. Pure buttery Gygax goodness for me baby!

  • I'd run 2E. It made the 1E ugly duckling into a beautiful swan!

  • 1E and 2E is what they play in old folks' homes! Why bother?

Well, personally speaking, I found both 1st edition OK because I didn't know any better and 2nd edition completely unplayable without house ruling it beyond recognition. For most of the 80s I DMed a cross between D&D and Dragon Warriors. Anyone remember Dragon Warriors?

To my mind, there is so little difference between 1e and 2e that it barely matters, it is all AD&D to me. I would, as I do, run a hybrid of both.

I chose first.

Given I played first edition (with houserules) until 3rd came out, that isn't a surprise (didn't care for the rules, nor most of the setting of 2nd - the only settings I really liked were Spelljammer, and Dark Sun... but the latter only so a really high level character could come in from another world and fix the place, and make it happy.)

I chose 2nd Edition. I was quite happy running my first true campaign in 2nd Edition, so I know I could make it work for the long haul. I also uncovered by old 'Keep on the Borderlands' module for 1st Ed, and reading through it has made me realize how strange that system was. Still, I have to admit, I am curious as to how 1st Edition would work in a campaign...

That said, I'm sticking with 4th Edition for the forseeable future. I can't wait to kick off that campaign.

No vote for me because there's no "Other, explain below" option.

I'd run a hybrid 1e/2e game. It's what I did once 2e came out. Except for a few minor changes, I never saw much difference between the two editions (but then I never bought many 2e products except for the "core" rulebooks and FR supplements).
