I know no one would consider a toad familiar. Just too ugly and useless (except for that boost in Con -- but even a boost in Con is not worth being nicknamed "Neville Longbottom").

My Wizard has a Toad familiar, and no one's going call me anything that I don't like.

Then again, I'm a 12th level Dwarven Wizard with a CON of 22. The only person in the group with more hit points than me is the pure fighter. :)

Well now we makes magic go wrong :)

First we chose a toad for its "useless" Con benefits, then in some wierd way we make it a Titanic creature :D , that is som familar mind you.

not legal but would make for some of most funny roleplaying I'll ever encounter methinks.

[DM] Well you have succeded, your Toad familar is now a Titanic creature.
[PC] Cool, now for some serious butt-whopping.
[DM] Well do you realize that your familar is a bit hard to bring into urban areas or down in dungeons do you?
[PC] Ehrrr, hmm well is there a reverse to this spell BTW?
[DM] Why do you ask that :D
[PC] Oh no reason really

(ok besides the toad with his +2 CON, which is really to much, compared to the other normal familiairs....)

My strongheart halfling sorcerer has a little rat (a cute one, not a nasty ugly looking one...hehe) as a familiair, +2 on the fort save still makes it my highest save, even better than the will save. But I used it in contrast with his background, so the fort save is a bonus, but a usefull bonus it is.

If I took a fmailiar which I almsot never would.

My 1st choice would be from I think a dragon mag a Monkey. Cause then I could having a dancing monkey. I'd be siting on a porch with a banjo(closest medival equiv if necesary or maybe a harmonika)I'd be Billy Bob the Hick Wizard with the Monkey Familiar Yee-Haw.(Maybe he's a vampyre. Lets do some tests. I hear that Vampyrs bounce, Jake take him to the top of that tree and drop him, was that a bounce, hmm I hear Vampyres also burn really good, Jake gets the diesel. Ah Darkwing we hardly got to know you)

If just PH I'd for the Bat, go echo-locaiton.

A monkey would make a great familiar for a Multi-classed Bard. Let the monkey give a +2 to perform (he's much cuter than the Bard after all)... :)

What do you think is more useful ... to have more Hitpoints and maybe survive an ambush well... or having a +14 listen creature that has a good chance of giving you warning...even if a round before ?

I still cant understand why people bother with Toads ! Owls and Bats are great scounts and lookouts ! I have been countless times acted faster or wasnt caught off guard due to my owl listening to something.... faster reactions are better than +1 hp per level any day....

So far my group has done a rat and a thrush. The rat is strictly for the +2 fort save, the wizard rarely allows the rat out except for occasional scouting.

The Mystic Wandered took a thrush (TnB I believe) same power as a raven but smaller and less noticable. Of course, the character regularly uses the familiar as cheap spellcaster countering. Put on silence, or silence and invise purge and just flies the bird around to find invisible people and silence spell casters. A pretty good tactic but sooner or later Thrush will get killed doing it, I suspect.;)

In my group, we like weasels and snakes. Either one can hide up your sleeve, and be out of harm's way, out of sight from curious townspeople, etc...

No one in any of my groups has a toad.

Our alienist has an improved familiar: stirge. Of course, it gets the pseudonatural template, which allows it to change into a mass of writhing tentacles... so it spends ALL of its time in this form, a cluster of flying, blood-sucking tentacles!

Everyone loves the little fella. He's got *style.*
