D&D General Poll: How tough should 20th Level Fighters be? (MCU edition)

Which of these is close to where a fighter should max out in D&D?

  • Post GG2 Star-Lord

  • Black Widow / Hawkeye

  • Black Panther / Captain America

  • Spider-Man

  • Somewhere in this Big Gap

  • Hulk (really good, but no flight or turning to electricity)

  • Captain Marvel / Thor

You didn't have "none of the above". I don't think of Star Lord as a fighter. Rogue maybe. Hawkeye literally never missed and Black Widow also isn't really a fighter. They're different.

Black Panther and Cap are probably close if you assume magic that they will have at that level.

Even with a girdle of giant strength, a fighter is not going to even be in the ballpark with the Hulkster for shear power. Thor is literally the god of lightning, his weapon just helps him channel the energy and again there's no comparison.

It was a rough scale, I'll admit. As for Star-Lord, I'm not sure what he is post GGII :-)

BW couldn't be a dex build?

Where's the "Thanos" option? Sure he's the BBEG but when he's fighting he's better than any of this lot* one on one and uses less magic/technology to get there. (his wizard-types are his sidekicks, in fact; reversing the sometimes-perceived situation in D&D)

* - except maybe Captain Marvel, but as she and Thanos only briefly fight each other directly it's hard to say. In Endgame he takes everything Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man can throw at him - together! - and is winning rather handily until the cavalry arrives.

Fighter Level 20 (Battlemaster) [in 5e terms] = Al'lan Mandragoran, Lord of the Seven Towers, Lord of the Lakes, True Blade of Malkier, Defender of the Wall of First Fires, Bearer of the Sword of the Thousand Lakes, May He Sever the Shadow, Dai Shan, and known to the Aiel as Aan'allein.

Now equip him with a necklace of magic invulnerability (we come down to what makes martial equal to casters) and he can challenge incredibly powerful "wizards". Huge Spoiler for the end of Wheel of Time just below...

So no vote from me, superheroes are not great archetypes for high level fighters. :)

Level 1 should basically be a commoner with a bit of training. The wannabe hero stepping out into the dangerous world for the first time. A goblin, wolf, or bandit should be dangerous if not treated seriously.

Level 20 should be Captain America/Black Panther levels. Superhuman, but still human (or whatever species you are). Able to do feats above what the healthiest people in the world can do. But not things like fly or lift buildings. That's assuming no magic items though.
