Vile d20

"Vile" content seems to be a perfect candidate for SRD and d20 publishing. For PR reasons, it is probably best for WotC to steer clear from here on out. However, it would be a nice module to add to the SRD so that d20 companies can run with it if they choose. The rule set really is nice for the "eldritch evil" proto"Chthulu" gaming archetype (unhealable damage, etc.). Other companies (including Malhavok) could develop it a lot more - like what has happened with Psionics.

I'm with pretty much everyone else on this point - Yes, as long as it's dealth maturely (not like FATAL...). Vile content (not that shock-value crap in BoVD, but really vile stuff) should be set aside in separate supplements, which should be labeled as such. Keep it out of Dragon, keep it out of the other books, yadda yadda.

I'd like to see additional vile/mature products. Some people (read: me!) don't have a lot of time/creativity/devotion to elaborate on villians other than "Mwahahaha (take 47 damage)." Not only do the books give ideas for creating truly memorable and evil villians, but they give (hopefully) balanced rules on how to numerically implement their villany.

If someone doesn't want to read vile books, they don't have to. You also don't have to read Harry Potter if you find it offensive, nor are you required to take Interstate 12 to get to town; however, other people would like the option to do these things. Some books are meant for everyone, some are meant for a select few. Take Races of Faerun... no "objectional" material, but not something everyone would have a use for. Just because you don't want to use RoF, would you protest the release of the book?

I just don't want the books i pay hard coin for to be toned down to make mothers happy.

Am I the ONLY person insulted by this image?

I have no intention of ever purchasing "Vile" material myself, and yet I still voted yes. It's obvious that their is a desire for this material in the industry.

Experience and time have shown that the market will regulate itself. White-Wolf probably learned that lesson better then anyone, "savage genitalia" anyone? (Refers to a character trait from the Black Dog Fomori book...and yes, it was as bad as it sounds).

So while I have no desire for Vile material, obviously some people do and if the market will bear that material, then it should be published.

This is much better then not publishing the material, because some editor or publisher finds it distateful.

Do you consider a nude faux-neoclassical sculpture to be vile? To me, that's a different topic. I also would have had no problems at all with that statue having no clothing. There wouldn't be anything degrading about such.

I dunno about 'vile', but I'd love to see a really gritty city. Like say the city from Thieves' World. That had some stuff in it that made me go 'Ick, that's evil'.

Or maybe a Cthulhu-ish fantasy setting, like the Kane novels from the late Karl Wagner

I don't really want to see silly 'vile' stuff, like the afore mentioned magic items from BOVD.

I don't really care as to the continued generation of such content, but I'm about fed up with the word vile.
