Cats are the best.

Is this a statistic that is reflected throughout the RPG community or is it skewed by the online factor?

Cats = Chaotic, DnD Players = Chaotic (usually anyway) I think it is an alignment thing

I personally am a dog person, had some cool cats once, but love dogs, though my lab/shepherd sometimes thinks she is a cat.

Well, the thing about dogs, is they require a lot more room than cats.

I have 2 black labs and they run and run and run and run. If I didn't have so much room outside, I couldn't handle them.

OTOH, you can pretty much get by having 1 room per cat. So although I only have like 3 rooms, it's big enough for my 3 cats (I don't let them outside).

I'm not sure cats like being left alone. I mean, you can, unlike dogs, but in my experience, cats get awfully lonely, too. When I was in college and just had the 1 cat, she would always greet me at the door, and would always be by my side when I was home.

And I feed several stray cats. They often want to get petted more than to be fed.

Cats just tend to have more pride (and dignity) than dogs, and don't like to admit they are lonely.

Funny that you mentioned that: of the 6 cats I have now, the youngest male of the bunch is named Smudge. All white, with a lil' bit of greyish-black on the top of his head--when he was a kitten, it looked like he had a couple of oily fingerprints on the top of his head. As he got older, they faded--guess they really did get washed off.

FYI, I'm one exception to that: often play NG PCs and LG paladins.

Dogs are at the top of my list... I have had lots of them through my life, so there is an understanding there that I just don't have with other animals.

Personally, fish though pretty to look at (and I scuba dive a lot) they are at the bottom of my list for pets. Can't really hold and cuddle them, they just eat and need lots of cleaning.
Plus fish either die easily or I just have a way with killing them.

I'm a 'multiple'. Dogs love me. I love dogs (in any other thread, that could be taken the wrong way, but not this one, I hope ). Cats are cool, too. My last two avatars have been Scratch Fury and Catbert. Yes, they're both evil, but aren't all cats?

Lifelong dog owner here. I prefer big, protective dogs over foot-warmers. I'm partial to Rottweilers and large Dobermans (not the little bitty ones that are the fad now). I'm helping Mom breed our Rotts. I like other breeds too, but I prefer the working breeds and hounds.

From observation and experience, I don't find cats that much different from dogs. At least, the cats I've known weren't much different from dogs. The one I had loved water, especially bath water. :\ If I get a cat, I'd like it to have that quirk.

I love snakes, but I can never own one because Mom has African Greys (which will probably outlive her), and Dad is afraid of snakes.

There must be something wrong with me. I don't like any pets at all. I don't hate animals. If I go over to someones house and they have a pet I'm all like, "Ya, that cute and stuff." But I feel no desire to take it home.

I don't think there's anything wrong with you. Liking animals and wanting to own them are two different things. Just like you can admire the beauty and speed of a sports car without feeling an inexplicable urge to take out a mortgage on your home to get one, you can also enjoy the company of animals without wanting to live with them.

Thanks, you have a point. In the past I have had roomies with pets. The cutest ones were a pair of ferrets. If only they didn't stink so much!
