Heck, I buy my offsale beer at a leather club called (get this) "The PumpJack"...

The Pumpjack has gone Leather? Wow.

Originally it was a diner called Doll and Penny's that catered to the drag crowd.

I guess one other thing that I can't get past is the number of folks that think that because someone wants to use the BoEF (or one of the other three sources that have been mentioned) they also want to RP sex at the table. While some may, some don't. The PrCs, spells, critters, etc. can still be used without having to graphically describe the sex act. You can still fade to black and leave it to the imagination.
i think this bears repeating, because even downthread from where hunter first said this, people are still equating the BoEF with playing out creepy "sex fantasies" with their gaming buddies.

if that was all the book had to offer, i wouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole. ;)

but since that isn't the focus of the book, i might actually be picking it up.

depictions of violence are common in the fantasy epics and mythic cycles D&D and other roleplaying is meant to emulate, but so is romance. if this book can help interject that aspect without becoming tasteless, crude, or "creepy", then i think it'll be a good thing. i personally would have no problem roleplaying out a romantic plot arc in a game, given that all the "graphic" stuff is going to happen off-screen and not be described. just like i don't have graphic descriptions of gorey violence in my games either, because they would disturb me just as much...

my earlier point with the sex/violence issue could have been worded better. yes, violence is frowned upon in our society. but the graphic depiction of fictional violence seems to be everywhere and seen as rather bland and normal, whereas any mention of sex is still somewhat taboo. i think kenjib had some really good insight with his public vs private reasoning. even so, i still find the attitude puzzling.

Yeah, Doll and Penny's has been gone for a few years now. We live right across the alley, and I can tell you we miss the drag shows. It was fun listening to the crowds on Friday nights.

Now it's just cranky guys fighting with their boyfriends.

Sigh, I miss the drag queens.

Hey, I think I just had the silliest idea for a game product yet. Wait, where's Mr. Valterra's phone number?

I'd even settle for Chapters on... "Why Does Blipdoolpoolp Look Nothing Like a Kuo-toa?" :D

Because lobsters are MUCH sexier than fish. Duh. Ever seen a sexy humanoid fish? Have you? Huh? No, I didn't think so, wise guy. But humanoid lobsters? Sexxxy. They transcend the kuo-toa tradition of poor body-image. That Mr. Gygax knew what he was doing when he designed the kuo-toa.

Luckily, I think this is covered in the new Underdark book.

AAAGH!! What's with the Acronyms?

Okay, maybe my head's in a hole, but what the heck is "AV" and what the heck does "BOEF" stand for??

AV Stands for Anthony Valterra. Former Buisness Manager of WOTC (Wizards of the Coast).

BOEF stands for Book of Erotic Fantasy. A d20, err. I mean, An OGL Complient Source Book that focuses on Erotica and Sexual themes.

You can find a lot of information at www.valarproject.com Previews, Forums, and contact info for Mr Valterra and Valar. Feel free to ask questions on the forums if you're curious. And if you're 18 or over we have a preview section as well.

Are you associated with the Valar Project or is the "we" just an inclusive usage not to imply an actual business relationship?

Arthur was a playtester of the BoEF and is one of the frequent posters at Valar (kind of an unofficial moderator, as it were).

Although I have a relationship with valar, its not a buisness one.
What hunter said is true. Additionally I'm running an official contest where the prize is a free copy of the BOEF.

In retrospect perhaps i should have used they, but because I spend time there and know them personally, we is kind of second nature. I do feel like a representative of valars forum and the book, as a playtester i feel its my responsibility almost.
