awesome. :) swords & blasters space opera a la Jack Vance. gotta love it.

Planet of Adventure and Big Planet were both really cool books with lots of interesting cultural details and adventure hooks.

fwiw, in July GURPS is coming out with a Planet of Adventure sourcebook. :)

FWIW, my original proposal was entitled "Sword And Blaster", because that's how I think of the genre. Erik decided, rightfully, I think, that something a bit punchier was needed, so the sample setting also lent its name to the mini-game. (I want the mini-game to inspire people to create their own worlds of planetary romance; the sample setting, while cool and nifty and deep and certainly capable of standing on its own, is intended also as "Here's how you can put one together" rather than "Here's the setting for these rules". I tried to make the rules suitable for ALL worlds of the genre, and cordoned off the very few setting-specific rules clearly.)

The vast bulk of the feats, classes, and so on will work on Barsoom or Mongo or the world of Lin Carter's Green Star as well as they will on the sample world.

Interesting. I'm not overly familiar with the genre, but I'd like to check some Lin Carter and Jack Vance.

Definitely good gaming territory. When I read John Carter [and Philip Jose Farmer's Tierworld stuff], I thought, wouldn't this be a cool way to run Planescape? Dying worlds and epic adventures and strange creatures...

Lizard, I look forward to it. I'm gonna have to break down and just subscribe to Dungeon/Polyhedron...

I'm quite looking forward to Iron Lords. As a big fan of planetary romance (and the sword-and-planet adventures taking place on Zandra, Rann, Mongo, Callisto, the Planet of the Green Star, etc. etc.), this is exactly the sort of product I've been waiting for.

Will this have any OGC, Lizard?

Hey lizard, I'm assuming that you're the same "lizard" that is a frequent poster on the OGL/d20STL mailinglists. Which inspired a question, will this mini-setting use any (besides the SRDs) or offer any OGC?

Just a hunch because you mentioned that the optional "setting" material (i.e. ILoJ) will be "clearly" distinguished from the generic rules. That seems to hint that some effort was put in to also ensure that certain rules could be translated out to OGC.

And lastly, because I'm a sucker for material of this genre, no matter the rule mechanics behind it, is Paizo going to allow you to support the setting via "web enhancements", etc.?

This may be the first d20 Modern "setting" that inspires me to go buy the d20 Modern rule book...

That's entirely up to Paizo, and, based on the past, I'm going to guess, "No". When/if they decide to open the minigames up to the OGL, I will be happy to volunteer to suck the PI out of my rules and make a "Planetary Romance" SRD, but, at this point, they own every word.

Iron Lords of Jupiter rocks. Lizard did a fine job with the game, and the art that's coming in for it is beyond lovely. I think you guys are going to have a blast with it.

The game's got fun stuff like crystal rayguns, flying sticks, and a ton of new feats and advanced classes. Plus a pretty cool background. In fact, there's _so much_ cool stuff in the game that some of it will appear in #102, so you'll definitely see "support" for the game down the line.

#102 is shaping up to be an "all pulp" issue, with a setting for Pulp Heroes, an update on using that Mini-Game with d20 Modern, and supplementary material for Iron Lords of Jupiter.

Ha. Three Mini-Games in three months. And they said it couldn't be done.

Pulp Heroes with d20 Modern --- now there's good news.

I'd think that most of the minigame classes would make good advanced classes.

And the all-pulp issue is extra good news.

No Such Thing as a Coincidence?

Hey Lizard,

You listed Jack Vance as one of your inspirations for this mini-game.

I can't help but wonder, are you the same Lizard that often writes for the Excellent Prismatic Spray?

Just wondering.
