[Polyhedron] The Bimonthly "What's the Next Minigame?" Thread

No Ninja rpg just yet. It's coming eventually, however, as soon as I can find the right author and the right time to slot it into my schedule.

The next issue of Dungeon/Poly doesn't have a mini-game. It's just got a d20 Modern article featuring a ninja. The kids love the ninjas, and so do I.

Questions; Is this the start of the monthly Dung/Poly mag? Going by your quote above, I'm led to believe that there's going to be just the one Modern article. Am I correct in this assumption?

Suggestion; In a future Poly minigame, I would love to see a fightng game, sort of a D20 version of Mortal Kombat/Street Fighter and the like, which would involve wrestling as well. That would totaly rock

Right on. I tried to get something like this going using d20 Modern, but there were problems:

1. Brawler v. Martial Artist comes out kind of weird. Brawler keeps taking AoO.

2. Strong Hero 3 [with Melee Smash] and then Martial Artist is the strongest combo...a real fighting game would need multiple viable character progressions...maybe some new talents would do the trick?

3. Need a mechanic to simulate how fighters seem to be fresh in every fight in the video games and tournament fighter movies. Might use that HP reserve system from Omega World...or you could just adopt the conventions of the genre and have everyone regain full HP after every fight.

Yeah, this is the start of the "new era." There's a d20 Modern article, two Star Wars articles, the Living Greyhawk Journal, a new 4-page comic, and some other stuff, including a new regular map feature for d20 Modern by Christopher West. Also some general newsy stuff, including an interview with the Game Mechanics (a new d20 company made up of former WotC designers) and a report on RPGA activities at Winter Fantasy. All in about 40 pages.

I've had a few requests for that sort of thing. I really wanted to do a "They Live" license, which would allow for the wrestling, but it probalby isn't worth the effort (or the money) to track down that license. Dungeon Editor Chris Thomasson has been threatening a WWE-style wrestling game for ages, and I may have to take him up on it.

I am so looking forward to this. I love his work:) Can you tell us what the map(s) will be in the upcoming issues?

Paul,

Yes, the plan is still to have Star Wars stuff in every other issue. That plan will be put to a severe test with issue #100, because we've got a fair amount of other stuff to jam into that issue (including a Mini-Game that ties into "Incursion," a secret event that also will touch the pages of Dragon and Dungeon). So, with the caveat that there's not much room for anything but a Mini-Game in 100, all of the "even" issues should feature some Star Wars stuff.

I'm looking forward to the SW material. Although I do not play it, I'm hoping I can adapt it easily to my StarGate or other scifi campaigns.

As far as the minigame mentioned, am I right to assume that it will be D&D or fantasy based? If so, I'm slightly dissapointed. I was hoping that the Polyhedron would cover stricly Modern and SW material, along with supporting it's minigames, which does'nt get much support and leave the fantasy stuff to the Dragon and Dungeon mags where it belongs

Just for everyone's reference, I got my copy of Dungeon/Polyhedron in the mail today.

EDIT: Oh, duh, I'm a scatterbrain. The next minigame will be a Toon crimefighting game. From the editorial:

...Hijinx is the name of our next Mini-Game, a rock-and-roll cartoon crime-solving extravaganza in the spirit of Jabberjaw, Josie and the Pussycats, and the Gorillaz. No kidding.

I got mine! And early, I think, this time. At least, I think I was the first person to post about it on the main board. Generally, I liked it. I still need to read through the Adventure Path adventure in more detail, but I know I can use parts of it already. Liked the Star Wars stuff; glad to hear it'll be in every other issue.

Really not sure about Downer. I didn't like it at all, but I'll reserve judgement for a few issues. Maybe it'll grow on me. I really wish there was a market for serious fantasy comics; I'd love to see something in that vein, but I guess humor is better? Or does no-one submit such a thing? Something like
Lovarian Adventures or The Castings would be nice :)

I really liked Global Positioning. I assume it and Maps of Mystery will alternate?

Any chance of getting mini games based on fantasy settings from novels? (kind of like some of the articles that have been in Dragon) I would love to see Terry Prattchett d20, or maybe a Shakesperian setting.

I can just see running a campaign with Hamlet in Ankh-Morpork, or maybe Nobby meeting Ophelia. I cant wait to have Goneril encounter the Lancre Witches... or Mecbeth running into the Lancre witches...now there is an idea...
