Polymorph self is much better than polymorph other...
Lets check?
Self - Can change shape anytime caster wants, no save or disoriented
Other - Fixed shape, save or be disoriented
Caster only needs 1 5th level slot and extend spell feat at 12th level to be polymorph 24 hrs a day.
The ability to change shape as needed far outweighs the spell slot saved.
Say you’re a bugbear and you fall into water (1 round later you are a water breathing creature)
Say you are a bugbear and you need to get to the top of a building (1 round later you are a flying creature)
1 spell slot per day and these situations will not be a problem, versatility is the key.
