Hi, i tried to find this in earlier posts, but kinda didn't succeed....

So the question is about the Polymorph Self spell, If im a Dwarf/elemental savant. So the question is:

If i change myself into a troll or whatever and i want to change back to my original form (without ending the spell) do i turn back to my true form with my physical stats, or do i just become a standart dwarf with the str10/dex10/con14 stats?

I play in the 3rd edition

I think you can change back to your actual own form there (not just a dwarf who looks like you).

When the spell expires, is dispelled or otherwise ended, you revert to your original self, not a standard dwarf.

The question was about returning to my real form without ending the spell, so i can change to something else again in a while

In 3.0, the spell description says:

"The creature's new scores and faculties are average ones for the race or species into which it has been transformed. You cannot, for example, turn someone into a mighty weight lifter to give the subject great Strength."

So while you can make yourself look like you, your physical stats will be those of an average dwarf.

But that part does not really answer the question, whether you can turn into yourself. You can turn into an average dwarf for sure, of course.

I don't really think this question is answered in the spell description (maybe in some FAQ?). I do think, however, that it should be possible to just take on your normal form.

Well, that part doesn't, no, but the rest of the spell description does.

"You can freely designate the new form's minor physical qualities (such as hair color, hair texture, and skin color) within the normal ranges for a creature of that type. The new form's significant physical qualities (such as height, weight, and gender) are also under your control, but must fall within the norms for the new form's species. The subject can be changed into a member of its own species or even into itself. (If changed into itself, it does not suffer the abovementioned penalties from the disorientation of a new form.)

"The subject is effectively disguised as an average member of the new form's race. If you use this spell to create a disguise, you get a +10 bonus on your Disguise check."

All of this, read together, leaves me with the impression that you can disguise yourself as "yourself," but the form is not truly your own, and except for the explicitly excepted disorientation penalties, the normal limitations of the spell (including only-average physical stats) apply.

Yeah, that's basically the question, whether "itself" is also a "new form". I would say no to that question.

Everything other than "itself" is a "new form", hence only for those the rest of the text applies.

But that is just my opinion, of course. The text doesn't really say anything specific, either way.

If the rest of the text applies only to forms other than "itself," then why would there be any need to mention that the disorientation penalties don't apply?

FWIW, I agree that it seems odd that you can turn into "yourself," but not retain your own physical ability scores. Of course, it's equally odd that you can turn into Joe the Champion Weightlifter and not have above-average Strength.
