Possibly two Villains in Spider-Man 3

Venom would be without a doubt the ultimate movie supervillain; simply put he is the ultimate combination of visual appeal and popularity.
Popularity among comics geeks (thankfully) does not equate to popularity with the huge audience of the Spidey movies.

Venom has like... two.

I can't really remember the last time I read a great Doc Ock story, if I’ve ever read one.

And venom is also 30 years younger so even if you're right and he's only had a 2 good stories I bet he's got a better ratio than Doc Ock does. ;)

I do think there was a nicer way to say that (like maybe without the unneeded comment in brackets) but you are right about one thing… I imagine the typical audience member doesn’t know any of the characters beyond Spiderman looked like before the first one, and still after the second one I doubt they could pick out many/any of the other rogues not featured so they could probably careless about who the villain would be as long as the movie is good.

Ock isn't used very often nowadays. Not since Osborn came back from the dead.

But if you only take the Venom lifespan he still has a better track record. JMS Ock
arc. That Spidey vs. Ock miniseries that came out around the movie. Been rockin'
hard over at Ultimate Spider-Man. And that's only in the span of approx. 3 years.

Venom has had two great appearances that I know of, ever: His 616 origin story
and his Ultimate origin story.

Now, a big part of this is of course that after Venom's original creation we got, like,
fifteen years of pure dreck in Spideyworld and Venom has a lot of potentional as a
character, but because of his 'naughty word-90s' baggage he hasn't really gotten the chance
to prove himself as anything other than a lame joke.

This is why they're trying to reboot the concept with a new host now.

But anyway, you can't really expect people drooling for a character in the movies that
hasn't been able to prove himself in the comics?

Which he has tons of... He’s far more of a Batman villain in that the reader can feel empathy for him/them than your typical Spider-Man villain who are mostly criminals simply to be criminals. ;)

*shrug* Sorry, what I see is a slavering thing with teeth and tongue. Maybe I haven't read the right ones, but what I have seen shows no sign of soul.

And I don't think Batman villains are really any better than Spidey villains. Batman villains are, in general, psychopaths, just like Green Goblin. I don't think many can really identify with or truly empathize with that level of mental disturbance. Meanwhile, simple greed is something everyone has a handle upon.

Note - in the above, I call a marked difference between "empathy" and "symapthy". I dunno about even sympathizing with Batman villains, andy more than I'd sympathize with a tornado. :)

I guess we different definitions, which is fine by me, and to be honest next to Ultimate Spiderman just how many of those story arcs were pre-Spiderman 2 or weren’t released in conjunction of Spiderman 2? ;)

BTW: How did you get that past ENworld automated censorship?

Blame Eric Larson. He hated Venom too, and therefore "invented" the teeth-and-tongue-look.

I guess. I have nothing against seeing Venom on film, preferably the Ultimate version.

But he's not near the top on the list.

All before Spidey 2. Only the miniseries came out in conjunction with the movie.

What do you mean?

Wow... I didn't realize that JMS run had gone on so long now... :)

Well he's save numerous bystanders in the middle of his fights with Spiderman… Which isn’t your typical villainous act but to each their own. *shrug*
