Post Your Adventure Notes!

First, let me preface this by saying that I'm real anal-retentive about the games that I write, and I'm a published d20 author, so I tend to be more detail-oriented than is probably necessary. And yes, I generally spend WAY too much time on this stuff.

That said, I'm going to upload two things. The first is a dungeon that I worked up (complete with maps) that I worked on before my campaign started. This is something that is very detailed, that I had plenty of time to work on, and put a lot of work into it.

Then, I'll see if I can find some notes from something that I did with less time.

Let me also add that I intend to compile everything from my entire campaign into a big file and make it available to the great people here, since I've gotten so many good ideas from ENWorld on my campaign, it seems only right to do that. But, since you've asked early, I'll upload some of it early.

Enclosed is the "Tomb of the Lizardman King" - a fully statted, fully populated (with the exception of one room) CR 9 dungeon.

Also enclosed is something called "For whom the bell tolls". This was the game after the PCs finally got out of the pyramid (CR 10, essentially). It is far less detailed, and mostly contains some stats for some gripplis (friendly race of frogs), Slaad, and some trolls.

Sorry - the maps to the first dungeon I couldn't find, but they are in my story hour (see link in my .sig). 'round about page 3 or so.

There you go.

ETA: About the files. The first is a short scenario for first-level characters, using Arcana Unearthed rules and the Diamond Throne background. There's a magical night, a regatta, a crazed witch, and a circus (courtesy of Wicht :)), all rolled into one.

The second is an introductory adventure into the world of the Diamond Throne. It is a scenario for sixth-level characters and deals with intrigue, intrigue, and railroading (as usual, the PCs did everything different and didn't even get to the scripted ending -
four PCs level 6 defeated a lvl 7 runethane and a level 13 akashic...
I was proud of them :D)

Well, it's cool, even if it is in German! I find it amusing that the entire thing is German, except for the stats and names of magic items. Funny.

And I noticed "Musik:" - do you include entries for musical selections for each of the locations?
Or am I mistranslating that word?

You're not wrong, so to say :)

I've compiled three soundtrack CDs, and for major scenes, I choose which song to play beforehand, so that I can enhance the intended atmosphere.
In the other scenario, I tried a different approach, as it wasn't that much a scene-based adventure. I'm always trying to find a better form of writing up my notes, even when I'm actually satisfied with what I'm doing. On the other hand, I've got weather notes in there :)

And it would be a great hassle to translate the English AU rules into German, even when a good portion of it has D&D equivalents. My group has already translated the DT "slang" into German, so that we have a specialized vocabulary to use (or to disregard, in our case :))

You might also see that I sort scenes into two (three, really, but I don't think there are any cutscenes in the above notes) forms: Scenes and Intermissions, the latter being small scenes that round out the world or introduce not-yet-important plot threads. I don't really know why I explained that, but perhaps someone's interested :D

But thanks for reading, anyway.

My session notes/plotting.

Less so an actual set of adventure notes and more so just "current events" in my campaign, and a patch of encounters/notes.

You know, you could post your notes in a cross platform friendly format...

Not every computer has Microsoft Word.

How about HTML, TXT, or my personal favorite, RTF?

I tend to write up campaign notes on Word, but adventure notes in a crusty old notebook, by hand. I can't say why, but I find far more inspiration for adventure hooks and plot details when writing by hand than I do staring at my monitor. Of course, I usually write adventures while commuting, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.

My hand-written notes for a dungeon often look something like this:

Bad guy - Faustus. Wizard (necromancer) 5, paranoid & cruel with harsh whisper of a voice. Attacks intruders first, asks questions later. Will run to sanctum sanctorum if pressed. Knows the old seer in the village and his secret, knows where the young centaurs have disappeared to. Lots of zombie minions run household, wander room to room doing specific tasks. 1d4 zombies per area of stronghold.

Areas
Entrance/foyer - trapped, arrows CR1, Search DC 15, DD DC 20, +10 atk, 1d6 dmg.

Laboratory - 3 doors, 2 locked. Lots of strange alchemy stuff, glowing column of light in center of room holding pearl of power (1st). Touching pearl causes all zombies in house to move to lab and attack. Pearl was once potent but has been stripped of layers of magic over time.

Fake sleeping chamber - off lab, secret door to real sleeping chamber. Search DC 15 finds door and/or scroll of ventriloquism.

etc...

Later on after the adventure, I usually write up any pertinent information or NPCs that I will need to retain for future PC involvement.
