Maybe it was in the FAQ, but I really don't remeber. It never seemed to matter to me.

While you do get the feats every third level, you still have to be that level to get it. You can't be third level unless you already have a class and your levels total 3 for instance. THere is a difference between having enough XPo be third level and being third level.

Let's say he has everything but that one feat, and is turning 6th level.

Does he meet the requirements BEFORE he turns 6th level? No? Then he can't take the class yet.

He doen't get the feat until he is 6th level, and he isn't 6th level until he takes a class. There is no such thing as a place-holder - generic 6th level, waiting for class designation.

Any idea where I can find this breakdown of the specific order that all steps must be taken in when gaining a level? It doesn't appear to be in the PHB.

It is. I'll post a page reference when I get home, but for now look for a section on 'Advancement'.

This is the same section that everybody misses - it's also the one that provides the other side to the 'does raising Int raise your skill points at that level' argument - so don't feel too bad. It must be badly placed or something.

Actually, I know the section you speak of, and I discounted it partially because it says you calculate skill points before ability score increases. And that just seems silly .

I think it's p. 139 of the PHB, maybe?

Actually, no it isn't.

You get the feats for character level every three levels regardless of what class you pick. It does not depend on any of the class features, and you are picking it when you get the level. No 'banking' involved.
