Sorrowful Man

The Sorrowful Men are an assassin's guild that gets it's name from it's member' habit of apologizing to their victims immediately before they strike, by whispering softly the words "I am so sorry."

Masters of poison, the Sorrowful Men eventually learn to control their own metabolism enough to produce powerful toxins or antitoxins by merely concentratin. This is why prospective members must have at least a trace of yuan-ti blood (even if they are not aware of it themselves).

Class skills: as DMG assassin, mainly, plus heal.

Skill points per level: 6 + Int modifier.

Sneak attack: bla bla bla. It's just sneak attack.

Poison use: A Sorrowful Man is trained in the use of poison and never risks accidentally poisoning himself when applying poison to a blade.

Poisonous bite: at 2nd level, the saliva of a Sorrowful Man becomes poisonous when ingested or introduced into the blood, though this ability is generally useless in combat. A Sorrowful Man can only inject his venom while grappling a foe with exposed skin. The Fortitude save to resist this poison has a DC of 10 + class level + Con modifier. The initial and secondary damage is 1d4 Con. A Sorrowful Man is immune to his own poison, but not those of other Sorrowful Men.

Kiss the blade: Once per level per day, a 3rd-level Sorrowful Man can produce a dose of poisonous saliva that will remain potent even after being exposed to the elements. A common use of this ability is to coat
weapons in poison by licking them, or mixing the poison into food or drink.

Delay poison: Once per day, a 4th-level Sorrowful Man can change his saliva into an antitoxin. If ingested, it affects the subject the same as a delay poison spell cast by a druid of the Sorrowful Man's class level.

Poison immunity: At 5th level, the Sorrowful Man becomes immune to all natural poisons.

Poison: At 6th level, a Sorrowful Man can exude a contact poison from his skin once per day, producing an effect identical to a poison spell cast by a druid of the Sorrowful Man's level, only the saving throw DC is 10 + class level + Con modifier.

Spit poison: At 8th level, instead of using a melee touch attack with his poison ability, a Sorrowful Man can instead use a ranged touch attack with a range increment of 10 ft.

Neutralize poison: At 9th level, a Sorrowful Man can change his saliva into an antitoxin that, if ingested, duplicates the effects of a neutralize poison spell cast by a druid of Sorrowful Man's class level. This ability is usable once per week.


This is based on the Assamite clan from Vampire: the Masquerade. Not that I really tried to duplicate the abilities all that much, but the "licking the blade to make it poisonous" visual was the base of the class. The name and the explanation were swiped whole from G. R. R. Martin's _A Song of Ice and Fire_.


Some changes I've been considering (of course, adding some of these abilities means dropping some of those already in the table and/or upping the prereqs):

Drop sneak attack, change to fighter BAB, d8, 4 skill points.

Change Kiss the blade so that it makes the weapon acidic (+1d6 acid damage, I'm sure there's such an enchantment, but I can't remember where it's from), later upgrading it to acid burst.

Work darkvision in somehow, somewhere in the low levels.

Add ranks in concentration to the requirements, concentration as a class skill, and require concentration checks for some of the abilities.

Add the Freeze like the OA's shadow scout's. Freeze up, and get +15 to hide as long as you don't move three times per day.

Give out some sort of bonuses to escape artist, as a flavour thing. Maybe simply Nimble feat from d20 Modern as a bonus feat: +2 to escape artist, +2 to pick pocket.

Give out some sort of chameleonic ability: change self, alter self, bonuses to hide.


Comments? Suggestions? Would anyone take it? Would everyone take it? Should I swap some of the abilities in the table for some of those immediately above?
