[PrC] The Deadeye

I want to respond to this in a nasty way, but that would be childish of me. This is not the forum to beat the dead horse of role-playing versus roll-playing, nor is is a battleground for a fight to harden the definition of powergaming versus twinking out. This is a PrC.

"This is a PrC."

Right. And PrC's are supposed to be about prerequisites, flavor, and trade-offs.

The most important problem is that this guy has no flavor. "A really, really good Archer" is not a niche that's in dire need of a PrC.

He's a mish-mash of abilities plucked from multiple prestige classes that don't fit any particular concept. He doesn't really need fixing, because the "Deadeye" concept is redundant, it's already well covered by the various existing archery prestige classes.

mmu1 has a fairly abrasive style as I found out in another rapid-shot thread. I stopped arguing with him for much the same reason. If he keeps it up, well that's what the ignore option on your "user cp" is for.

Also, he clearly doesn't like archers at all. Just read over the thread.

Rackhir: I'm sorry for busting your chops. I just don't think the ninja style is a good way to do this. Think more like a archer-meets highwayman-meets ghostwalker, not stealthy. I'm trying to think of a good fictional parallel, but I can't come up with one right now. Maybe more like the comic-book archer Hawkeye if he shot to kill and had a generally dark outlook.

Well a more polite reply would have been better manners, especially as I was trying to offer some useful suggestions. I'm still not entirely clear though on exactly what you are looking for out of this class.

I was suggesting the modifications to create a class that could hit and then fade into the shadows only to emerge seconds later taking the victims by suprise once more from a different location. Something more akin to The Shadow or how Batman operates than a ninja.

I guess a description of how you would envison the class functioning would be helpful. Since you seem to have a specific style of operation in mind. Feats follow function to mangle a quote.

Aw... Would it help if I put "IMHO" in some of my posts? I'm sorry you get your feelings hurt when someone says "I think you're wrong, here's why".

There is a difference between disagreeing and being rude and obnoxious. Obviously you have yet to learn the difference. But as I said, that's what the ignore option is for. Time to go employ it.

These are the changes I would make to this class to make it more in-line with the final idea I formulated for this class -- mundane stealthy, good with a bow, who can locate people and follow people once he's on their trail. A Bounty Hunter, specialized in taking his targets out from range, who progressively becomes more and more dangerous against his quarries. I have to thank Hong for his Shadow Sniper -- I liked the Sniper Shot a lot, so I yoinked it... :D

A Rog2/Ftr4 should be able to qualify for this PrC.

The Deadeye

Hit Die: d8

Requirements
To qualify as a deadeye, a character must fulfill the following criteria.
Base Attack Bonus: +5
Skills: Hide 5 Ranks, Move Silently 5 Ranks, Spot 5 Ranks, Gather Information 5 Ranks, Diplomacy 5 Ranks
Feats: Point Blank Shot, Precise Shot, Rapid Shot, Weapon Focus (longbow or shortbow or the composite version of either), Skill Focus (Gather Information)
Special: Must recieve an invitation to join the Deadeyes.

Class Skills
The Deadeye's class skills (and the key ability for each skill) are: Climb (Str), Craft (bowmaking)(Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Gather Information (Cha), Hide (Dex), Listen (Wis), Move Silently (Dex), and Ride (Dex), Spot (Wis), and Wilderness Lore (Wis). See Chapter 4: Skills in the Player's Handbook for skill descriptions.
Skill Points at Each Level: 4 + Int modifier.

Class Features
Weapon and Armor Proficiency: None.

Sneak Attack
Any time the deadeye's target would be denied his Dexterity bonus to AC (regardless of whether he has a Dexterity bonus), the deadeye's sneak attack deals extra damage. The extra damage is +1d6 at 1st level, and then an additional +1d6 at 4th and 10th levels. Ranged attacks only count as sneak attacks if the target is within 30 feet. The deadeye cannot strike with such deadly accuracy beyond that range. If the character has the sneak attack ability as a rogue, the bonuses stack.

A deadeye can only sneak attack living creatures with discernible anatomies-undead, constructs, oozes, plants, and incorporeal creatures lack vital areas to attack. Additionally, any creature immune to critical hits is similarly immune to sneak attacks. Also, the deadeye must be able to see the target well enough to pick out a vital spot and must be able to reach a vital spot. The deadeye cannot sneak attack while striking at a creature whose vitals are beyond reach.

Track
At 2nd level, the deadeye gains the Track feat as a bonus feat.

Keen Arrows
At 3nd level, all projectiles the deadeye fires behave as if they were keen weapons in addition to any other properties they might possess. Thus, a normal arrow fired by a deadeye has a threat range of 19-20 instead of 20. This effect does not stack with any other keen effect.

Magic Weapon (Sp)
At the 5th level, the deadeye can produce an effect identical to that of a magic weapon spell cast by a cleric of deadeye level. This ability is usable once per day on projectile weapons only.

Legendary Shot
Starting at the 6th level, a deadeye may roll an attack on an opponent who qualifies for sneak attack damage. If the roll hits, treat it as a critical hit. This is a supernatural ability and can only be used once per day. This does not affect subjects immune to critical hits.

Sniper Shot (Ex):
The deadeye gains the ability to target her enemies with deadly accuracy from range. If she spends at least 3 rounds studying a target within her primary weapon's first range increment, she can treat her next attack on that target as a sneak attack. She must still satisfy all the other requirements for a sneak attack (effectively, this ability lets the deadeye overcome the 30-foot range limitation on ranged sneak attacks). Once the deadeye has completed the 3 rounds of study, she must make her ranged attack within the next 3 rounds to gain any benefit from this ability. If the blow fails to take out the target, 3 new rounds of study are required before she can attempt another sniper shot.

Banked Shot
This extraordinary ability allows the deadeye to fire an arrow at a target within 20 feet of a wall (but not adjacent to the wall) and treat the target as if flat-footed for purposes of AC and damage inflicted. This is a full-round action, since it is extremely difficult.

Ranged Disarm
At the 8th level, the deadeye can use ranged attacks to disarm opponents within 30 feet. Doing so doesn’t provoke an attack of opportunity from the defender unless a normal ranged attack would. Regardless of the ranged weapon the deadeye is using, it counts as a one-handed, Medium-sized weapon for the opposed disarm check. The deadeye cannot lose his own weapon during such an attempt.

Death Attack
If the deadeye studies his victim for 3 rounds and then makes a ranged sneak attack that successfully deals damage, the sneak attack has the additional effect of possibly either paralyzing or killing the target (deadeye's choice). While studying the victim, the deadeye can undertake other actions so long as his attention stays focused on the target and the target does not detect the deadeye or recognize the deadeye as an enemy. If the victim of such an attack fails her Fortitude saving throw (DC 10 + the deadeye's class level + Intelligence modifier) against the kill effect, she dies. If the saving throw fails against the paralysis effect, the victim's mind and body become enervated, rendering her completely helpless and unable to act for 1d6 rounds plus 1 round per level of the deadeye. If the victim's saving throw succeeds, the attack is just a normal sneak attack. Once the deadeye has completed the 3 rounds of study, he must make the death attack within 3 rounds. If a death attack is attempted and fails (the victim makes her save) or if the deadeye does not launch the attack within 3 rounds of completing the study, 3 new rounds of study are required before he can attempt another death attack.

True Strike (SP)
At the 10th level, the deadeye can produce an effect identical to that of a true strike spell cast by a cleric of his deadeye level. This ability is usable once per day on a projectile weapon only.

OTOH, if this class' special abilities were to stay as is, I think three changes would make this class fairly kosher.

1.) Change BAB prereq to +6
2.) Change to Cleric BAB
3.) Drop good Will Save

I'd sit and write up a more solid piece of flavor text, but I really don't have the time right now -- I have to go to work and collect the money I already owe to people... :D

Flavor?

Flavor? You mean like the 1/2 dozen or so other Bow based PRcs that already exist?:p If it allowed crossbows as well as regular bows, that would make it unique in a sea of PRcs.
