Preorder, cancel, preorder, cancel etc

Wow, that's a pretty condescending post. For the record, I've owned my store for 15 years so I must be doing something right. I'm well aware of the service I provide. I'm simply pointing out that it's what one might call a "bit" unfair to have online stores SELLING the books to customers for LESS than what us stores PAY from our distributors.

I am in no way condemning the CUSTOMER who pre-orders online, it's a good deal. The system is a bit flawed, though.

crazy idea. Maybe you could buy from amazon instead of your distributor when deals like this come along? get a few copies from the distributor opening day, but have the rest in pre orders so they will arrive a day or two after that. hay the shippings free. it may not make sense but you will be saving a few dollars a book.

-edit-
*i see that you partially answered a similar question further back. I still think you could get the rest of your orders from amazon if their prices hold.

Not the customer's problem. <snip> Customers don't owe a business anything. Ever. That isn't how real business works.

I wonder where in my posts that you get the impression that I thought it WAS the customers' problem, or that I didn't understand how real business works.

I think it's fairly clear that it would be pointless to talk to you about any subject if I wasn't ready say "Fenarisk, you are amazingly insightful and I bow to your obvious superior intellect."

A moot point, given that torrents of the materials are already up as of this last weekend for those who would want early previews while waiting one extra day for the print material off amazon.

Not the customer's problem.

It's not WOTC's problem to see that smaller business do just as well as large ones, it's the problem of the business owners and management.

Local Gaming Stores are the only laughable stock of businesses that think it's the duty of the customers to keep them in business. You aren't a charity, you're a business, and the only job you have is to give people a good reason to buy there. Hosting free things, play sessions, or a nice atmosphere that don't require books to be bought doesn't keep a place in business. One can just as easily buy everything half off at amazon and play at your place. Name one other business that relies on some false sense of charity for a business.

Customers don't owe a business anything. Ever. That isn't how real business works.

You're right, customers don't owe businesses anything. They pay businesses money for a good or service. They are not there to make "donations" to the business.

Sure you could just buy everything off of Amazon and still use your FLGS to game, check out new books, etc.,

However, if enough people do this then pretty soon you will find you won't have a LGS, let alone a FLGS. Amazon might be able to sell you discounted books but you can't drop in to Amazon to have a quick look at the latest release. You can't hold gaming sessions at Amazon. You can't put a notice up that you are looking for new players at Amazon. There are a number of things that your FLGS does that Amazon can't.

Having said that, do I buy all my books from my FLGS? No. Like most people, I've only got a limited gaming budget and I try to get the most value out of it I can. Sometimes the prices available online are just too low for my FLGS to even get close to So I still buy some gaming books online (not from Amazon but other online stores) as well as my FLGS.

At the same time I still make sure I my FLGS sees some of my money. For example, whenever the latest set of D&D minis comes out I put an order in with my FLGS. I could probably save myself AUD$30 per case by buying them online but I buy them from my FLGS to keep them in business. That way they are still around when I need to find new players, check out a new product or if I just want to stop in and shoot the breeze about gaming in general. I'm not doing it as a charity. I get my money's worth due to the fact I have access to the things I listed above.

If you don't hold any value in having access to the things I have listed then obviously you don't need a FLGS. It has no use to you. Just don't complain when the FLGS closes its doors and you find it is suddenly a lot harder to find other people to play with or you can no longer flick through a product out before you buy it.

I have canceled mine twice now...
Both times for a better price ^_^
Down too $54.85 now for the core 3

What will the cost of shipping be, if you don't mind me asking?

You don't have to pay shipping to buy from your FLGS...the price difference may not be as great as it seems.

But then you automatically get the state sales tax slammed on. Paying that 7%-10% upcharge hurts more now than putting it off to pay later around tax time. Since we all pay our back sales tax for online purchases. Then depending on the distance, that $4 a gallon gas kicks the buyer around too.

I just preordered mine by Amazon. It will cost me 48€ (~$72), shipping costs included. It should be here 9th-30th June.

I consider it a big deal considering that, if I wanted the Spanish version, I would have to wait months (who knows how many) and each book would cost me 35-40€.

If that's the deal I'm thinking of (and getting) shipping is free, and state sales tax is included already. I had much the same, only with an extra 5% for AAA membership making the grand total after tax and free 3-day shipping $51.25.

I just canceled with Amazon and called my FLGS. I can prepay and get the package with slip sleeve for $89.75 (with tax) from them and get it the day of release (also coincidentally gaming night). With Amazon it was ~$70.00 with next day air shipping and would not arrive until the 9th. I want it on the 6th. I am willing to pay. A couple of my players will make the pilgrimage with me and pick up the PHB's. And we will have 4e goodness that night......
