Prestige Class or Pain in the (Cl)ass?

I hear ya, Kaptain.

My distaste of the PrC's is that while the spellcasting classes continue to gain geomatric power, the fighter-type classes (and PrC's) seem to progress in a linear fashion.

If a fighter-type ability is powerful at all, it is usually restricted to like only once per day!

Whereas, the mages can cast their uber-spells multiple times per day (and with all the damned +1 level of spellcasting PrC's out there gain even more power)!

Endurance and Run shouldn't even be feats, IMO, nor should Toughness (as written). They are essentially worthless or used too infrequently. How can having something useless clogging up your feat slots help you feel better about your character? They do nothing, so they add nothing.

I am also opposed to requirements that don't fit my concept of how the class should function (sunder for blackguard, for instance).

Skill Focus is a bit different. I use Skill Emphasis (+3 to one skill) from Star Wars d20, so it's not as crappy. Requiring more than one Skill Focus is too much, IMO.

There are other feats my group never uses, such as Quick Draw, because it's too much trouble to remember the rule.

I'm also disposed to making the PHB save booster feats +3 as well. They really suck to take. They aren't glamorous. Every time a player has taken one, they grumble about it endlessly. They only took it because they botched a save that wreaked havoc (usually a Will save).

Wizards are frequently hurt by +1 lvl prestige classes (if the class ability isnt a meta magic feat or very close its a waste IMHO). Sorcs have nothing to lose and should always strive for a P-Class.

Hoo boy. :)

I don't have the FR bad-guy book, but I do have the DMG, and, to me, the Blackguard makes perfect sense. Perhaps not 100% ideal for a fighter, but part of the design of the class is for a fallen paladin, an anti-paladin type, not Evil Boy Fighter. In this respect, as an anti-paladin, something like Hide makes perfect sense -- if Paladins are epitomes of bravery and virtue, Blackguards would be sneaky and covert. They'd be able to hold thier own in a fight, but would likely try to avoid a fight, putting others into the fore and withdrawing when the battle comes to them...

I dunno...I don't yet see an example that I can see of a PrC that has idiotic requirementsd...perhaps I'm just blinded by the lack of FR bad-dudes? :) I wouldn't be surprised if they existed, but...some specifics would be nice.

The painting of the Spur Lord seemed to imply he wore heavy armor. I had a vision of Knights Templar rather than sneaky types... I didn't have the book to check--just a mental picture of a skull-faced black knight from the Lords of Darkness illustration).

Heh... it's probably because you don't have your book, but that painting doesn't have any Spur Lords in it. The skull-faced, heavily armored person in the picture is Blackwill Akhmelere, a Clr13 of Cyric. The other two people in the picture are most likely Olma the Bloody, a Clr11 of Cyric, and a generic guard, possibly Captain Sivhet, a Ftr6. None of the three have levels of Spur Lord. The caption of the picture even says "Blackwill and guards." :D

It is on the page facing the Spur Lord description, but the descriptive text, prerequisites, abilities, and class skills of the Spur Lord all point towards a lightly armored rogue-ish PrC. IMHO, at least. ;)

Oops. I thought those were Spur Lords, LOL.

Well Endurance and Track are important for one of MY favorites, the Viligant.

Knowledge (Planes) is use IF you want to be a devil like they have for Green Steel Monk. Oh and they use Endurance too.

Blindfight works well for Balan's Jackal, along with Handle Animal and Intimidate.

Bluff, Sense Motive and Skill Focus(Bluff) are needed and I think appropriate for a Mountebank.

Combat Reflexes, Dodge and Run are used for Plague lord, even if they are more interested in infecting others.

Embermages need Endurance

Graven One has Toughness, especially with all the tatoos they have.

Craft(Glass) is DEFINATELY important for a Mirror mage.

Animator has these for requirements:

Alchemy: 8
Knowledge (anatomy):8
Knowledge (arcana): 8
Knowledge (undead): 8
Feats: Skill focus:(Knowledge: Anatomy), Spell Focus: Necromancy, Spell Mastery

The Unfailing have Endurance along with Great Fortitude, Iron Will and Toughness.

Seems to make sense so far would you say?

Spur Lords never made sense to me and I don't think I care THAT much for them.
