Problems with Polymorph

First Post
Could people remind me why polymorph, in 3.0 and/or 3.5 is such a problem? Back in the day when I was running my 1/2e game polymorph was used infrequently, usually for spying missions in the Vault of the Drow. I am particularly displeased that the duration was reduced so low that how I originally used it is no longer possible.

I really enjoy higher level play, but my group is only just beginning to get to this point. Many other I have spoken to, mostly when 3e first came out, mentioned who broken the spell was. I don't really see it. So, I figure the fine folks of this board can help set me straight.

(I am aware of the giant problem, and am working on a solution for that. I gather there are other problems as well.)

Mostly the problem with polymorph is that people used it as a 'buff spell' instead of as a 'turn into a creature' spell. So instead of becoming a rhinoceros and trampling your foes, you turn into a giant and use your sword and armor and end up stronger than any normal creature of that size.

It's also used a lot as the "bluff" spell too. It's a lot easier to steal the king's treasure if you are the king. It has all three functions. Bluff, Buff and polymorph. Subterfuge, strength and mobility(flying, swimming, burrowing), all in one spell.
