Ok, there has got to be a better use for profession, no character will really take it unless it is required in a PrC. I dont on the other hand... i love that skill, i just want to know what some of your ideas on the different professions, and how much they make the player earn.... right now i have a mage that has 14 ranks in the profession skill in architecture. I have got to earn more money than some one who has the same amount of ranks in profession(waiter). Could there be like a list of professions and prerequisites...isnt a profession wisdom based... why not break it down,, like an street acrobat would have dex as its modifier, or a comedian have charisma... a novelist or an architect use intelligence. I mean come on... just give me some ideas that you have in your games and what not...

Well, you can always use the DMG hiring guide as a guideline.

Also, IMC each class gets associated Profession(Class) as a class skill, and one free rank in it per level. I use this to represent the "Old Boys" network, professsional gossip, etc. I also use it as a sort of reputation measure, and as a "hook generator".

For instance, a fighter new to town, looking for a good armorer, might make a Prof(Fighter) check to remember that his sparring partner a few adventures back recommended a smith in this town. A gather information check on the same topic might yield the name of a more skilled smith, or the fact that the smith's bedridden with a fever.

Go to about page 31 (?). It is a great way to get the thought process going on how you want to do this. At the very least, it has some sample profession skills :)

I'm kicking around ideas of having profession skills provide synergy more often. For example, Profession[laborer] can get synergy to three craft skills, Profession[sailor] gets synergy to Intuit Direction, Balance, and Swim, and so on...

That makes Profession, which is currently behind Knowledge and Craft for most characters, something much more interesting.

I really like the idea of giving it synergy bonuses, that is pretty genius, thanks for the idea, i will run it by my DM. Thanks guys, keep anymore ideas open... bye
