I've never understood how or why players think that someone "dumping" an 8 in a stat and thus making things "boring" for them... suddenly sees this boredom go away by the player putting a 10 or a 12 in the stat instead?

Because the difference between an 8 and a 10 is literally a 5% change (and 8 to 12 is 10%). How in the heck can a person notice any sort of differences at the table by 1 out of every 20 rolls now succeeding where it otherwise wouldn't have... and suddenly their "boredom" has gone away? That's just ridiculous.

Personally, I think this is another one of those times where players just go too deep in the number weeds... spending more time staring at the character sheets... and not enough time just playing the game. Because I guarantee you... if you had no idea what was written down on a particular player's sheet and only went by how that player roleplayed and the straight numbers they announced when they rolled... you'd never be able to determine whether that player had an 8 in a stat rather than a 10 or a 12. In other words... you'd have zero idea whether they "dumped" a stat or didn't.

Stop looking at people's character sheets and just watch them play. You'll be a lot happier and a lot better off.

The "boring" is when the same stats keep getting that 8 every single time. The frequency of 8 in Str, Int, and Cha feels like poor design to some of us, and making some targeted improvements may lead to more diverse character options.

This is why we always roll our stats.
