Believe it or not, those clever lads at the Klingon Language Institute must have heard this old joke, because the official Klingon word for fish is now ghotI'.

I kid you not.

On the pronunciation front, nobody ever mispronounces my name, but I get my first name spelled wrong all the time. I've seen the following permutations:

Jonhathan
Jonathon
Johnathen
Jonathin

Back when I was in college, I once had a paycheck come to me made out to "Jonathan Richards." I filled out a form to correct the spelling, and the next time it was made out to "Johnathan Richardson." I thought that was bad enough, but the next paycheck was made out to "Richard Johnson." Finally got it straightened out after a month of effort.

I also had a PDF I had written accidentally attributed to "Joseph Richards." Ironically, I have a brother named Joseph, but the guys in charge of the PDF didn't know that.

Just going to copy this from another message board where this came up recently...

Tsyr is an old name for me, I've been using it from things such as DnD characters to logins for about the last 10 years. I never imagined when I first scrawled it on an Elven Fighter/Mage's character sheet that it would cause such problems being pronounced, but I've had questions about it pretty much every since I started using it online.

I really don't know how to display Tsyr phoneticly in English, but I'll try to explain it... It's a bit easier if you are familiar with Russian. Tsyr can be spelled quite easily in Russian:

That having been said, here we go...

The 'quick and dirty' way of saying Tsyr is "zeer". It's not 100% correct, but it gets you in the general ballpark.

The "Ts" is unique... It's normaly not used in the way I'm using in the english language. Think of the word "cats". Now, take the "ts" sound from the word, and soften the "t" sound just a bit. When you get it right, it should sound almost like a "z", just with a bit of 'catch' to the begining of it.

"y" is being pronounced as a double E, as in "beer", or as an EA in "fear", "near", or "hear".

"r" is just "r", nothing special there.

I hope that clears up any confusion, and I invite anyone else with a complex, unique, or funny-sounding name around here to hijack this thread with instructions on pronouncing their own name... Sometimes you get surprised how many people were pronouncing it way wrong (My old Everquest guild thought it was "Zire", and I had one person say it like "Tie-zer", which isn't even close... )

Oh, and Joshua... I pronounced it "Dial", for what it's worth.
